Canon has released details of a new 100mm f2.8 EF macro lens with image stabilisation. This supercharged version will sit alongside the current EF 100mm f2.8 macro lens, adding new hybrid IS technology, L-series designation, weather sealing, and ultra-low dispersion (UD) glass to the mix.

The image stabilisation compensates for 2 stops shutter speed at 1:1 magnification, increasing to 4 stops at longer shooting distances. What’s new about the image stabilisation found in the EF 100mm f2.8L macro is Canon’s brand-new hybrid IS technology. The hybrid image stabilisation system compensates for linear and rotational shake, making image stabilisation more effective at close distances.
The addition of weather sealing is a real bonus for overzealous water-droplet spraying macro photographers and for the rest of us, upgraded protection from the tough environments macro lenses are subject to. Changes to the external design allow a tripod mount to be added, increasing the stability & sharpness whilst using the EF 100mm f2.8 L IS macro lens on a tripod.
Backgrounds are sure to be smooth thanks to the 9-aperture blades forming a rounded aperture diaphragm (the non-L 100mm macro has 8 aperture blades).
