FAQs:
Is the Monovid 8x25 a replacement for compact binoculars?
The Monovid is positioned as a smaller alternative rather than a direct replacement. The single-eye design reduces size and weight to 152g, making it easier to carry and quicker to use for short observations. However, it does not provide the same depth perception or long-term viewing comfort as binoculars, so it suits situations where portability matters more than extended viewing.
How do the 8x magnification and field of view work together?
The 8x magnification provides enough reach to resolve distant detail while remaining stable for handheld use, which is important in a monocular. This is supported by a 120m field of view at 1,000m and a 6.9° angle of view, giving enough width to scan across a scene without repeated repositioning. Together, they maintain a balance between usable detail and efficient subject acquisition.
What level of image quality does the optical system provide?
The Monovid uses a roof-prism system with P40 phase correction, combined with Leica’s HDC coatings and the HighLux-System (HLS). These maintain light transmission at around 90%, supporting a bright image in daylight and mixed lighting conditions. Contrast remains consistent across the frame, and colour reproduction stays neutral, which helps maintain separation in fine detail rather than exaggerating it.
How does the close focus system work, and what does the close-up lens add?
The standard close focus distance is approximately 2 metres, covering general observation without additional accessories. When the supplied close-up lens is attached, this reduces to around 25–30cm, allowing detailed inspection of small subjects. This extends the Monovid's function beyond distance viewing, making it suitable for reading fine text, examining textures, and observing small objects.
Is it comfortable to use over time and with glasses?
The eyepiece provides 15mm of eye relief, allowing use with or without glasses while maintaining a full field of view. A rotary eyecup with two fixed positions helps set the correct viewing distance, and ±4 dpt diopter adjustment allows the image to be matched to individual eyesight. A 3.1mm exit pupil also provides a more forgiving viewing position, reducing the need for precise alignment.
Is the Monovid built for regular outdoor use?
The monocular uses an aluminium housing to maintain rigidity while keeping weight low, with a leather exterior for grip and durability. Internally, it is nitrogen-filled and fully sealed, preventing dust, moisture, and internal fogging. It is also watertight to a depth of 5 metres, allowing use in wet conditions without additional protection.
