Optical Performance

As expected from all Leica SL lenses, this lens features the very same advanced optical structure that enables exceptional image-quality in every frame. The elaborate optical design is made up of 19 specially formulated, high-quality glass lens elements arranged into 15 groups, three of which feature aspherical surfaces on both sides. Nine of the specialist-glass elements feature Leica's anomalous partial dispersion technology provide effective chromatic correction through the 24-70mm focal range, and as a result even highlights are free of colour fringing.

As a result, you can create a dramatic sense of depth and separation between your subject and the background, and this is particularly effective with this lens and its minimum focusing distance of 18cm.

Leica SL2-S Imaging Excellence

The SL2 has some fantastic video features and this has been carried over to the SL2-S but with some tweaks. The SL2-S offers up to 4K at 30p 10bit 4:2:2 / C4k at 30p10bit 4:2:2 (internal) up to 4K at 60p 10bit 4:2:2 / C4k at 60p 10bit 4:2:2 (via HDMI), all with an unlimited recording limit. As well as this, the SL2-S offers high-speed recording for UHD 4K60 with 30 fps playback, and Full HD 180 fps with 30 fps playback, offering 2x and 6x slower motion, respectively. To accompany this incredible video quality the SL2-S features a dedicated Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) Photo Style mode as well as L-Log gamma profile, both of which offer more flexibility when you're colour grading in post.

A feature that has been wanted amongst many Leica users is IBIS - In-body Image Stabilisation. This is where Leica and Panasonic share technology. The SL2-S adopts the very same, extremely powerful and impressive 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilisation found in the likes of high-end Panasonic mirrorless cameras. This industry-leading technology offers tack-sharp handheld precision with the use of a 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilisation compensation system. To further utilise this sensor-shift stabilisation tech, you can make use of the SL2-S's multi-shot mode. This mode captures and puts together eight separate images to create a single and compile eight separate exposures to create a single 187MP raw or JPEG file.

The SL2-S body has been designed with you in mind. It is equipped with dual UHS-II compatible SD card slots which offer flexible storage options, allowing for large cards and for segregating file types, saving duplicates or doubling your storage space for overflow recording. The decision to use SD UHS-II cards means that they can switch between cameras e.g. for an A and a B camera setup. The body has also been upgraded with an improved weather sealing rating of IPX54, offering splash, dust and freeze resistance; with the outer-shell further constructed from a magnesium-alloy for added durability.

The SL2-S features a truly incredible EyeRes Electronic ViewFinder (EVF) with a high-resolution 5.76m-dot OLED. Once you've looked through this EVF, all others will seem insignificant in comparison.
