The Westcott FJ800 is an 800W battery-powered touchscreen monolight with a 9-stop power range, fast recycling and high-speed sync. It gives more output than the FJ400 II for larger modifiers, brighter conditions and longer working distances, while the included FJ Pro battery provides up to 250 full-power flashes. A 30W bi-colour modelling lamp, an OLED touchscreen, and Creative Mask mode provide direct control during studio and location shoots.

  • 9-stop power range adjusts from 3.12Ws to full output
  • 0.01 to 1.8-second recycling keeps pace across varied power settings
  • FJ Pro battery provides up to 250 full-power flashes
  • 30W bi-colour modelling lamp adjusts from 2700 to 6500K
  • OLED touchscreen gives direct access to onboard flash settings
  • Group colour indicators show assigned light groups from behind

Higher-output FJ lighting

The FJ800 sits at the top of Westcott’s FJ monolight range, giving photographers 800Ws of flash output in a portable AC/DC head. That extra power matters when you are pushing light through larger softboxes, placing the head further from the subject or working against bright ambient light. The included 29.6V FJ Pro lithium-ion battery attaches directly to the head, so the strobe can operate without mains power and still fire up to 250 times at full output. At 3.4kg with the battery attached, it is larger than the FJ400 II, but the built-in handle makes it easier to lift, place and adjust on set.

Power range and flash speed

The 9-stop power range runs from 3.12 Ws to 800 Ws, with 0.1-stop adjustments for small exposure changes and 1.0-stop steps for faster adjustments. Recycling runs from 0.01 to 1.8 seconds, so the head recovers quickly at lower power and remains practical at full output. Freeze mode shortens the flash duration to as fast as 1/25,000 sec t.5, using the brief flash pulse to stop movement in the frame. High-speed sync up to 1/8000 sec also lets you use wider apertures or darken ambient light when shooting in brighter conditions.

Touchscreen control and group indicators

The full-colour OLED touchscreen gives direct access to the strobe’s main settings without relying on deep button combinations. You can adjust power, sync behaviour, modelling light settings and firing modes from the rear of the head. LED group colour indicators on the back make it easier to identify which light belongs to which group when several FJ units are on stands. That is useful in larger setups, because you can glance across the room and confirm which head you are adjusting before changing the lighting balance.

Modelling light and colour consistency

The built-in 30W LED modelling lamp adjusts from 2700 to 6500K. When you change its colour temperature, the visible light shifts to warmer or cooler tones, so you can frame, compose and judge shadows more easily under different room conditions. The flash output is rated at 5500K ±150K, which keeps colour steady across repeated frames and power changes. Voltage stabilisation and a self-monitoring cooling system support consistent behaviour during longer sessions.

Wireless system and Creative Mask

The FJ800 has a built-in 2.4GHz receiver with 31 channels, 16 groups and a wireless range of up to 100m. With a compatible FJ trigger, it supports manual control, TTL, front- and rear-curtain sync, flash exposure compensation, and high-speed sync across major camera systems. The StudioLink app also allows wireless adjustment from a phone, which is useful when the strobe is high on a stand or placed inside a modifier. Creative Mask controls which lights fire across a sequence, so you can capture several lighting passes from one fixed setup without moving stands.

Mounting and included accessories

The Bowens S front mount accepts a wide range of compatible softboxes, reflectors and other light shapers. A 9mm umbrella receptacle gives another simple way to spread light, while the 5/8-inch tilting bracket mounts the head on standard light stands. The supplied 5.5-inch magnetic reflector provides a direct beam from the flash head, and the gel set includes CTO, 1/2 CTO, window green, and diffusion for colour correction or a softer reflector output. The kit also includes a frosted glass dome, Rapid Box Switch / Beauty Dish Switch insert, USB cable, power adapter and storage case.

FAQs:

How powerful is the Westcott FJ800?

The FJ800 is rated at 800W, making it Westcott’s most powerful FJ monolight. That higher output gives more headroom when using large modifiers, working at greater distances or competing with bright ambient light. You can reduce the output across a 9-stop range to 3.12 Ws when you need a gentler flash level. This makes it suitable for both high-power setups and more controlled portrait or product lighting.

How fast does the FJ800 recycle?

The FJ800 recycles from 0.01 to 1.8 seconds, depending on the selected power setting. At lower output levels, the capacitors require less energy before the next flash, so the head becomes ready almost immediately. At full 800Ws output, recycling takes longer because the strobe has to rebuild a much larger charge. This balance provides both speed and high output without forcing the photographer to choose one over the other.

Can the FJ800 use TTL and high-speed sync?

Yes, the FJ800 supports TTL metering and high-speed sync when used with a compatible, non-included FJ trigger. TTL lets the camera and strobe communicate so flash output can be calculated automatically through the lens. High-speed sync supports shutter speeds up to 1/8000 sec, which helps when you want wider apertures or less ambient light in bright conditions. The strobe also supports front- and rear-curtain sync for different timing effects.

What does the 30W bi-colour modelling lamp do?

The modelling lamp gives a continuous preview of where the flash will fall before you take the photograph. Because it adjusts from 2700 to 6500K, you can shift it warmer or cooler to suit the surrounding light while checking the shape of shadows and catchlights. This is useful when placing the head inside a softbox, aiming a reflector or setting up interview-style lighting. The modelling lamp does not replace the flash output, but it makes it easier to position the flash accurately.

What modifiers can I use with the FJ800?

The FJ800 uses a Bowens S front mount, so it accepts compatible Bowens-fit softboxes, reflectors, beauty dishes and other light shapers. It also has a 9mm umbrella receptacle for direct umbrella mounting. The included magnetic reflector gives a more direct beam, while the supplied Rapid Box Switch / Beauty Dish Switch insert supports compatible Westcott modifiers. The extended, user-replaceable flash tube spreads light broadly into modifiers, helping the surface fill more evenly.
