Today, Tamron has announced its new 17-35mm f/2.8-4 Di OSD ultra-wide-angle lens for full-frame DSLRs. Weighing in at just 460g and with a maximum length of 92.5mm, Tamron claims it is the smallest and lightest lens in its class. The optic owes its small stature to Tamron’s latest OSD (Optimised Silent Drive) focusing mechanism. This innovative system not only allows the lens to be more portable, but we’re told that AF performance and speed have also been vastly improved.

The 17-35mm f/2.8-4 Di OSD features Tamron's latest Optimised Silent Drive.

The 17-35mm lens has been designed with Broad-Band Anti-Reflection coating (BBAR). This allows ghosting and flaring to be controlled throughout the entire zoom range by reducing reflections on the front element. Due to the enhanced possibility of capturing backlit subjects when using an ultra-wide-angle zoom to shoot landscapes; this feature should make photographing vistas in challenging situations a more manageable task.

Here you can see the LD elements (grey) and GM lenses (brown).

Internally, the lens features 15 elements in 10 groups, with four low-dispersion (LD) elements to help minimise the effect of axial chromatic aberration, which ultra-wide-angle lenses can sometimes suffer from. In addition, two glass-moulded (GM) aspherical lenses should also help to reduce other types of distortion and aberration, while a seven-blade circular diaphragm is set to provide attractive and smooth bokeh.

The lens’ construction includes multiple seals to help protect it from moisture and water droplets, making it more usable in tough, outdoor conditions. This design is complimented by a robust fluorine coating on the front element, which helps to repel dust, water and oil. The coating not only keeps the front element cleaner for longer, but should make the lens easier to clean when soiled.

Compatibility with the TAMRON TAP-in Console (sold separately) allows users to benefit from the peripheral’s ability to easily update firmware and fine-tune the lens’ performance.
