Hi, I’m John from Wex Photographic. Welcome to Wex Tips.

To save loading in each battery to find out which ones you’ve used, some battery covers have a cut-out to help. Simply position the battery in its holder to show the color label through the cut-out; and when it’s used, place the battery in the other way round, showing the part of the battery without the label on. If your battery doesn’t have a colour label, then simply use a coloured dot sticker to help with this.
