Excellent optical and mechanical performance in a very compact size was the design objective for this Nikkor lens. To achieve this, Nikon designers addressed several key design points. Using the latest computer aided techniques, the optical design was optimized for a balance of size, weight and image quality. Mechanical construction takes advantage of strong, yet lightweight materials that are resilient and good looking.Another key element considered in the design of the AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G was built-in aperture control, a feature on the newest Nikon SLR cameras, which does not require that the lens have an aperture ring. With this point in mind, Nikkor G lenses omit the aperture ring, resulting in a lens that's more compact and lighter. This approach offers photographers all of the advantages of Nikkor optics without loss of performance for their new Nikon SLR cameras.
