Many of these types of headphones use Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). This is a process that responds to the specifics of the noise around you, using built-in microphones to analyse the ambient soundwaves around the headphones. An ANC chip then inverts these soundwaves, and the headphones produce opposite, reversed sound waves to cancel out the noise. This process works best with low-level, constant noises like engines, air conditioners or vacuum cleaners – also known as ‘steady-state’ noises.

Some noise reduction headphones have more passive isolation features. This generally means things like extra-padded earcups for over-ear headphones or moulded tips for earbuds – essentially anything that can physically block out external noises. This tends to be better for blocking mid-high frequencies of noise, while ANC does a better job of screening out lower frequencies.
