What’s new?

The TTArtisan AF 35mm f1.8 II is lighter than the original, dropping from 199g to 176g for better balance on compact APS-C cameras. Its updated optical design uses 10 elements in 7 groups, including high-refractive and ED elements for sustained sharpness and controlled colour fringing. The lens’s minimum focusing distance is now 0.4m, down from 0.6m, allowing tighter compositions. Firmware updates are performed via a USB-C port on the rear lens cap, allowing upgrades without external ports.

Natural perspective and subject separation

The 35mm focal length provides a natural angle of view on APS-C cameras, equivalent to approximately 53mm on full frame. This perspective closely reflects how scenes are perceived by the human eye, helping maintain balanced proportions between subjects and their surroundings.

The wide f1.8 aperture lets more light reach the sensor, enabling faster shutter speeds in dim conditions while minimising ISO. Together with a 9-blade diaphragm, this design delivers fluid background blur and smooth highlights, enabling subjects to stand out distinctly from their environment.

Autofocus and subject recognition

Autofocus utilises an STM lead-screw motor, which moves lens elements in precise increments for smooth, silent transitions and reliable focus accuracy. When paired with compatible Sony cameras, the lens integrates with subject-recognition autofocus systems, including eye, animal, and vehicle detection, allowing the camera to track targets as the lens performs focus adjustments.

Close focusing capability

The TTArtisan AF 35mm f1.8 II focuses as close as 0.4 metres. Reducing the minimum focusing distance from the previous generation allows tighter framing of small subjects and everyday details without requiring additional accessories. At close range, the standard-angle field of view preserves natural perspective. This makes the lens useful for photographing subjects such as food, crafts or personal items while still maintaining a sense of the surrounding environment.

Metal construction and compact handling

The lens barrel is constructed from 5052 aviation-grade aluminium, providing a durable structure while maintaining a lightweight profile. The metal finish also gives the lens a consistent mechanical feel when mounted to the camera. At approximately 176g, the lens remains comfortable to carry during long shooting sessions or travel photography. The compact design balances well on APS-C mirrorless cameras and keeps overall kit weight low for everyday use.
