Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones

When we talk about noise cancelling, we’re normally referring to Active Noise Cancelling (ANC), a process that uses built-in microphones to pick up the wavelengths of ambient sounds, and actively cancels them out. Some over ear wireless headphones are also equipped with more passive noise cancelling features, such as pads that literally block sounds out.

When we’re talking about wireless, these days we mean Bluetooth noise cancelling headphones. These have become more or less essential for anyone who frequently listens to music or podcasts on their phone, as many smartphone manufacturers have removed the physical headphone jack from their devices. Bluetooth headphones run off internal rechargeable batteries, which usually charge via USB-C (or micro USB in the case of older headphones).

You can choose between in-ear or over-ear wireless headphones. Both types have their advantages – over-ear headphones produce better sound quality, and benefit from passive isolation features, while in-ear headphones are smaller and easier to transport. Many in-ear wireless headphones also come with their own charging case, capable of re-juicing the internal batteries multiple times over. This means you get more listening hours before needing to plug them back in.
