The Atomos Shinobi 7 II is a 7-inch, 2800-nit HDR touchscreen monitor with USB-C camera control and professional monitoring tools. Its larger display provides more room to judge focus and exposure, while the high brightness keeps the picture visible outdoors. Compatible cameras can be adjusted directly from the touchscreen, with aperture, shutter, ISO and white balance controls keeping common shot-by-shot changes within reach.

Atomos Shinobi 7 II Key Features:

  • 7-inch 2800-nit HDR touchscreen provides a large, bright monitoring view
  • USB-C camera control adjusts key exposure settings directly from touchscreen
  • Touch-to-focus sets focus point directly on compatible camera systems
  • HDMI input and output support Ultra HD 4K signals up to 30p
  • Log, PQ and HLG monitoring displays 10+ stops of dynamic range
  • EL Zone™ and scopes provide detailed exposure checks before recording
  • Focus peaking and zebras reveal focus position and exposure thresholds
  • Built-in 3D LUT support previews graded Rec.709 appearance during capture
  • Frame guides and grid markers provide clear references for composition
  • Anamorphic desqueeze displays squeezed footage at a viewable monitoring ratio
  • On-device calibration works with compatible probes without requiring a computer
  • USB-C PD, NP-F battery and DC connections provide flexible power sources

Larger, brighter monitoring

The 7-inch display provides more viewing area than a conventional 5-inch monitor, making fine focus, framing and image detail easier to assess without enlarging individual areas of the picture. With brightness up to 2800 nits, the display stays clearly visible outdoors or under strong ambient light. This makes it easier to monitor highlights, shadows and focus when direct sunlight would otherwise make a lower-brightness display difficult to read.

Camera settings from the touchscreen

Connecting a compatible camera over USB-C places commonly adjusted camera settings directly on the Shinobi 7 II touchscreen. On-screen sliders provide access to aperture, shutter speed or shutter angle, ISO and white balance, reducing the need to move between the monitor and camera when making exposure adjustments. Compatible cameras also support touch-to-focus, so tapping the required area of the displayed image moves the camera’s focus point accordingly. For still photography, the shutter-release function can trigger the camera directly from the monitor. This is particularly useful for HDR bracketing and focus stacking, where avoiding physical contact with the camera between exposures can reduce unwanted movement. Camera status information includes internal recording settings, battery charge and remaining recording time, while a red border indicates when the camera is recording internally.

Assessing exposure and focus

The Shinobi 7 II includes EL Zone™, false colour, waveform, vectorscope, zebras, RGB parade, and focus peaking to evaluate the incoming image signal. Waveform and exposure displays provide a measurable reference for tonal values, making it easier to identify clipped highlights or shadows rather than judging exposure by the screen’s appearance alone. Focus peaking identifies areas of fine contrast, providing a clear visual reference when setting focus manually. Frame guides and grid markers place fixed references over the image for composition, while anamorphic desqueeze displays squeezed footage at a viewable aspect ratio. Multiview analysis combines monitoring information on screen when you need to assess several aspects of the signal together.

Monitoring Log and HDR

With support for Log, HLG and PQ signals, the Shinobi 7 II displays more than 10 stops of dynamic range in real time. When monitoring Log footage, this provides greater visibility of the highlight and shadow information contained within the signal, rather than relying on the naturally flat appearance of the Log image. Built-in 3D LUT support provides a real-time preview of how Log footage may appear after conversion to Rec.709. Custom LUTs (.cube files) can also be loaded from an SD card, giving productions a visual reference for their intended final appearance while retaining the original Log recording.

Connections, calibration and power

HDMI input and output support 1080 HD and Ultra HD 4K signals up to 30p, making the Shinobi 7 II suitable for direct camera monitoring or passing the signal to another display. USB-C provides compatible camera control and USB PD power, while the NP-F battery slot provides battery operation when a fixed power source is unavailable. DC power through a battery eliminator provides another option for longer fixed setups. The display supports on-device calibration with a compatible third-party calibration probe, removing the need to connect the monitor to a computer during calibration. An SD card slot lets you install custom LUTs and firmware updates, while an RJ45 Ethernet connection also provides wired network connectivity.

FAQs:

Can I control my camera directly from the Shinobi 7 II?

Yes. Compatible cameras connect over USB-C, providing touchscreen control of aperture, shutter speed, angle, ISO and white balance. Supported models also offer touch-to-focus and shutter release, which is useful for HDR bracketing and focus stacking. Camera control supports compatible Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Panasonic and Sony mirrorless cameras.

How can I power the Shinobi 7 II?

The Shinobi 7 II can receive power through USB-C PD, an NP-F battery or DC through a battery eliminator. USB-C PD provides a direct power connection when a suitable supply is available, while the NP-F battery slot provides self-contained operation for portable setups. DC power offers another option for longer fixed installations that require continuous power. These three connections let you match the power source to how you mount and operate the monitor.

Which anamorphic lenses can the Shinobi 7 II desqueeze?

Shinobi 7 II provides desqueeze settings for 2x, 1.8x, 1.79x, 1.65x, 1.6x, 1.5x, 1.33x and 1.25x anamorphic ratios. Selecting the appropriate setting stretches the squeezed camera signal horizontally on the display, presenting the image at a more natural viewing proportion. This makes composition and focus easier to judge while the camera continues to record the squeezed image. The range of settings covers several commonly used anamorphic squeeze factors.

Can the Shinobi 7 II display embedded timecode?

Yes. The Shinobi 7 II can display timecode embedded in the HDMI signal, and it also supports time-of-day display. The monitor does not provide LTC or a reference/genlock input. This distinction is important for productions that require dedicated external synchronisation rather than simply viewing timecode supplied by the camera.

Does the Shinobi 7 II support audio monitoring?

Yes. Shinobi 7 II supports up to eight channels of 24-bit audio through HDMI and provides a 3.5mm headphone output for monitoring sound. This means the operator can check audio from the incoming HDMI signal directly from the monitor alongside the picture.
