Intelligent picture adaptation

The GP520 is centred around BenQ’s Intelligent Ambient Adaptation system, which continuously analyses the viewing environment through three integrated sensors. As room brightness changes or the projector is positioned at different distances from the wall, the projector adjusts brightness, colour balance, and image tuning automatically to maintain a more consistent picture. This reduces the amount of manual adjustment typically required for home projection, particularly in open-plan living areas where lighting conditions shift throughout the day.

Wall colour also has a noticeable effect on projected images. Cream, grey, or coloured paint can alter skin tones and reduce colour accuracy. BenQ’s wall colour correction system compensates for six common wall shades by adjusting the projected image itself, helping colours appear closer to their intended look even without a projection screen.

4K clarity for films and sports

The GP520 projects 4K HDR visuals at sizes from 50 to 180 inches, giving films and live sports a more cinematic sense of scale than a conventional television setup. BenQ’s CinematicColor tuning increases colour separation and contrast, while HDR tone mapping balances detail across both darker and brighter parts of the image. Bright highlights remain visible without overwhelming shadow detail during darker scenes or HDR content.

For sport, the GP520 combines MEMC motion processing with a dedicated Sports Mode. MEMC inserts additional frames between movements to smooth rapid camera pans and reduce visible blur, which becomes more apparent on larger projected images. Sports Mode then adjusts colour and contrast to maintain more natural-looking turf, kits, and stadium lighting during broadcasts.

Flexible setup across different spaces

One of the GP520’s strongest practical advantages is its ability to adapt to a wide variety of room layouts with minimal setup. The projector supports front, side, ceiling-mounted, inverted, and upward projection positions, making it easier to work around shelving, furniture, or open-plan spaces. Three tripod mounting points also provide greater flexibility for temporary or portable installations.

Once positioned, the projector handles much of the alignment process automatically. Auto focus sharpens the image after movement, while auto 2D keystone correction straightens distorted edges when projecting from an angle. Obstacle Avoidance detects interruptions on the wall surface and adjusts the image area accordingly, while Screen Fit scales the picture to match the available wall space more accurately. Together, these systems reduce the need for repeated manual adjustments when moving the projector between rooms.

Integrated streaming and responsive gaming

Google TV is built directly into the GP520, providing access to Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, Disney+, and other streaming services without requiring an external streaming device. Personalised recommendations and Google Assistant support are integrated into the interface, while the SmartRemote app allows users to adjust brightness, keystone, and playback controls directly from a phone when the remote is not nearby.

For gaming, HDMI 2.1 with ALLM automatically switches the projector into a lower-latency mode when a console signal is detected. This mode reduces input latency during gameplay on systems such as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and Steam Deck. The USB-C connection also supports display output and charging through a single cable with compatible devices, reducing cable clutter around portable gaming setups.

Sound, connectivity, and everyday usability

The GP520 uses dual 12W speakers to produce fuller, more immersive sound directly from the projector body, making casual film viewing or sports broadcasts possible without immediately relying on external speakers. Bluetooth 5.2 allows wireless connection to headphones or speakers, while HDMI 2.1 supports 7.1-channel Dolby Atmos passthrough for larger home audio systems.

Connectivity includes dual HDMI 2.1 ports, USB-A and USB-C ports, supporting consoles, Blu-ray players, laptops, streaming devices, and storage media. The USB-C port can also supply power to connected mobile devices, making it useful for keeping handheld gaming systems or phones charged during longer viewing sessions. An optional dedicated carry case with tailored compartments keeps the projector and accessories organised for storage or transport between rooms.
