The 70-200mm f/2.8 is a beloved workhorse lens, used extensively by many professional photographers to get the job done. It’ll be those people with cause to celebrate today, as Canon brings out an upgrade Mark III version of this lens, as well as an upgrade to the f/4 model.
Replacing Canon’s flagship lens, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM is built for outdoor work, with seals that render it resistant to moisture and dust. It also has fluorine-coated front and rear elements that are easy to clean, and a 3.5-stop image stabilisation system for ensuring blur-free shots.
The eight-bladed diaphragm of the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM will allow it to create pin-sharp shots with a silky-smooth out-of-focus background. The EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM is built to match the high standards of its predecessor, a more affordable 70-200mm lens for photographers working with a tighter budget. Weighing just 780g, the lens is a good pick for the travelling photographer who doesn’t want to be too overburdened. Its elements have fluorine coating to resist dust and water drops and Super Spectra coating, which reduces ghosting and flare. The lens’ construction also contains fluorite elements designed to correct colour aberrations.
Autofocus is achieved using a combination of ring USM and a new third-generation EF engine. The silent focusing has been tweaked to allow a close focusing distance of 1m, compared to 1.2m on the preceding model.
