Have You Seen the First Commercial Shot on the Canon C200 Yet?

The Canon C200 shows off what it can do in Jaguar's latest commercial

Last week the Wex pro video team headed over to the Hospital Club in Covent Garden, London. Before you ask: no, it has nothing to do with hospitals, but it does have a rather nice private theatre room – we were here for a look at the first commercial to be shot on the Canon C200, and it did not disappoint.

When the C200 was first announced, the overall feedback from the filmmaking world was incredibly positive. However, one of the few niggles that users had when the specs were announced was the lack of a middle-of-the-road codec. From launch you had the options of recording in either a heavily compressed 8-bit 420 MP4, or 10 and 12-bit Cinema RAW light.

For me, after attending the screening this little gripe was soon forgotten. Yes, shooting in RAW is demanding in terms of storage and post processing, but knowing that you’ve got that potential, in a compact form factor, with Canon’s lovely colour science – well that’s music to my ears.

At the event, director Brett Danton ran us through the production – of which I’d really recommend checking out the behind-the-scenes video above. Brett had two cameras on the shoot, the C200 and Canon’s flagship C700.

In the end we were informed that only one or two shots from the C700 made it into the final cut of the advert – which speaks huge volumes for the C200. To be able to cut and match shots from a camera that costs roughly £26K (over three times more than the C200) is simply incredible.

The future looks bright for Canon’s latest addition to their C(insert numbers) family, and we look forward to seeing filmmakers create some fantastic content with it.
