No matter your platform or purpose, audio can make or break your content. You need to consider a microphone that will capture great audio quality but also be easy to set up and use. The following microphones excel in capturing audio on the move, while showing versatility by recording into a camera or phone, ultimately improving your viewers' experience. Our selection is also based on being budget-friendly and easy to use for anyone new to audio, commonly ranging from £200-£350.

All of the below also allow you to connect lavalier microphones to the transmitters via the 3.5mm input, for professional-quality audio. Though the Rode Wireless Pro is the only set to be supplied with lavaliers included within the kit, the other systems allow you to add your own, or not at all if you don’t feel like you need one! Check out our blog on how to correctly conceal your lav mic here.

DJI Mic 3 (2 TX + 1 RX + Charging Case)

£259.00 View

Pros:

  • Great wireless range (up to 400m line of sight)
  • Internal backup recording (32GB per transmitter onboard storage)
  • User-friendly design

Cons:

  • No 3.5mm input for lavalier microphones

Audio transmission: 48 kHz, 24-bit

Internal recording: Dual-file 32-bit float

Noise cancellation: Two-level active noise cancellation

Type: Wireless Clip-On

Compatibility: USB-C and Lightning

DJI raised the bar with the Mic 2, offering creators a slim-profile transmitter that delivered high-quality wireless audio while remaining easy to conceal. The Mic 3 builds on that success, refining the design and introducing smarter features like two-level active noise cancellation (plus adaptive gain control), integrated timecode support, increased wireless range of 400m, and internal storage up to 32GB (up from 8GB on the Mic 2). These upgrades make it even easier to capture clean, professional sound in those unpredictable environments.

We think that, for content creators, the Mic 3 is more than just a microphone; after 2 previous iterations, it’s a necessary tool! The updated touchscreen interface allows quicker adjustments, and it’s still just as discreet, so it’ll stay out of sight without compromising performance. Interviews, vlogs or behind-the-scenes footage - the DJI Mic 3 does the lot, helping you focus on your storytelling, and not troubleshooting

Sennheiser Profile Wireless 2-Channel Set

  • Delivers up to 245m line of sight (150m through body)
  • Up to 7 hours on a full charge and recharges in under 2 hours
  • Weighs 26g
  • No App Required

Cons:

  • No Active Noise Cancellation
  • Small touchscreen can be tricky

Audio transmission: 48 kHz, 24-bit

Internal recording: 32-bit float (via firmware upgrade); 16GB onboard storage

Noise cancellation: None

Type: Wireless Clip-On

Compatibility: USB-C, Lightning and 3.5mm adapters

Sennheiser may have arrived late to the wireless mic party, but the Profile Wireless proves it was worth the wait. With clean, natural audio capture, generous internal recording and a hardy, lightweight build, it’s designed for reliable performance without the fuss. The all-in-one case design, as well as the lack of app dependency, means it’ll be great for mobile interviewers, podcasters and solo shooters.

A con of this is that it lacks active noise cancellation, which isn’t ideal. It also relies on a small touchscreen interface. But despite these, it is a simple and effective option. Plus, it offers Sennheiser’s top-tier audio quality - that’s a massive pro in and of itself.

Rode Wireless PRO

£249.00 View

Pros:

  • Reliable wireless range (up to 180m line of sight)
  • Includes 2x Rode Lavalier II microphones
  • Timecode support and dual-channel recording
  • Error correction and auto latency management

Cons:

  • Bulky transmitter design

Audio transmission: 48 kHz, 24-bit

Internal recording: 32-bit float with safety channel

Noise cancellation: None

Type: Wireless Clip-On

Compatibility: USB-C, Lightning, 3.5mm, and Rode Central app

Rode’s Wireless PRO microphones are one of the most feature-rich systems out there, and are used across the industry. We’re talking features like timecode sync, 32-bit float recording and dual-channel capture. It is very much designed for precision and flexibility in one, especially when there are multi-camera or professional workflows involved. It also comes with two Lavalier II mics included and effective error correction, meaning it’s a solid choice for interview setups.

Like other options out there, the Rode Wireless PRO does rely on an app to use key functions and controls - although, we don’t completely see this as a bad thing because most do - most things in modern life require an app. It also has a larger transmitter design that may not suit every creator. For those who prefer plug-and-play or a slimmer profile, the other two options in this guide may be more suitable.

FAQs

What is the best type of microphone for content creators?

For most creators, a condenser microphone is ideal thanks to its ability to capture clear, detailed audio. A condenser offers more natural sound for YouTube videos, streaming, or recording a podcast, especially in controlled indoor environments.

Do I need an XLR or USB microphone for content creation?

It depends on your setup. USB microphones are plug-and-play and perfect for beginners or those after a simple, all-in-one solution. XLR mics offer more flexibility and better sound quality when paired with an audio interface, making them better suited for professional content creation.

Can I use a microphone with my smartphone or camera?

Yes! Many microphones are compatible with smartphones and cameras using the right adapter or cable. Just make sure the mic suits your filming style. Compact and directional options are best for on-the-go shooting or vlogging.

What features should I look for in a microphone for video content?

Look for features like cardioid pickup patterns to reduce background noise, built-in pop filters to smooth out harsh sounds, and low self-noise levels for cleaner recordings. And make sure it’s compatible with your existing kit!

How important is microphone placement for sound quality?

Extremely important. Even the best mic will struggle if placed poorly. Keep it close to your mouth, angled slightly off-centre to reduce plosives, and away from noisy environments. Good positioning makes a noticeable difference to your audio quality.
