4K image quality with HDR control
The Canon CR-N400 camera uses the DIGIC DV7 processor and a 1/2.3-type sensor to produce crisp 4K60P video with smooth motion and rich colour depth. In controlled lighting or mixed environments, HDR modes including PQ, HLG, Canon Log 3 and Wide DR provide enough latitude to retain highlight detail while keeping shadow tones clean. This helps maintain consistency across multi-camera rigs where matching matters, especially when combined with Canon’s colour tools.
Auto tracking for hands-off coverage
Auto tracking allows the CR-N400 to follow a subject across a set without constant operator input. Using Hybrid AF with face and head detection, the camera locks on and drives pan, tilt and zoom movements smoothly enough to resemble a manual operator. It reacts cleanly when a presenter changes direction or steps briefly out of line, maintaining usable framing rather than making sudden corrections. With support for Canon’s Auto Tracking App RA-AT001 (Lite) and the paid RA-AT001 upgrade, users can adjust behaviour to suit different studio or event styles.
Professional connectivity for broadcast workflows
Canon positions the CR-N400 as a studio-ready PTZ, and the interface panel reflects that. A 12G-SDI output carries full 4K60P down a single cable, while Genlock and Time Code keep it tightly aligned with other cameras on a switcher. Dual XLR inputs extend audio routing directly to the camera, reducing the need for external preamps when capturing panel discussions or live commentary. This combination suits permanent galleries as well as mobile control rooms.
Zoom reach in large venues
The 20x optical zoom covers wide stage framing and tight follow-ups, while the 40x advanced zoom in Full HD is useful in arenas, auditoriums or church spaces where the camera is far from the subject. The lens maintains strong contrast and detail at the telephoto end, giving operators confidence when cutting between cameras during live mixes. Auto tracking still holds framing at these longer focal lengths, provided the subject remains clearly visible.
Accurate focusing for studio or event coverage
Hybrid AF supports face and eye detection alongside standard tracking, keeping the camera locked on presenters even during subtle movement. It performs well in lower light, where stage wash or coloured LEDs would challenge simpler AF systems. When a production calls for very deliberate reframing, manual control remains available through Canon’s software or hardware controllers without disabling the underlying tracking capability.
Flexible streaming and IP control
The CR-N400 integrates smoothly into IP-based studios and remote-production setups. Support for NDI|HX2, SRT, RTMP/RTMPS, RTSP/RTP, Canon XC and serial/IP control gives producers a wide set of options for routing signals and managing cameras across a network. With 4K over HDMI and SDI, the camera connects easily to broadcast switchers, software mixers and dedicated streaming hardware. This flexibility is useful when combining traditional gallery infrastructure with newer IP-driven systems.
Auto Loop for repeatable moves
Auto Loop lets you programme repeated pans, tilts and zooms that the camera executes consistently over time. This is practical for fixed displays, stage performances or exhibition spaces where a steady, predictable movement pattern is needed alongside tracking shots. Operators can store these moves and recall them as required, keeping output consistent without constant manual control.
Designed for fixed installation
At 3.1 kg, the CR-N400 installs comfortably on ceiling plates, trusses or wall mounts. The built-in ND filter helps control exposure under bright stage lighting, and its NC35 operational noise keeps it discreet during quiet productions. Rated to run from 0 to 40°C, it fits reliably into broadcast suites, control rooms and event spaces. For multi-camera setups, its form factor and connections make it straightforward to integrate alongside existing units.

FAQs
How does the auto tracking behave in a live studio setup?
In a studio environment, the auto tracking follows presenters with measured pan and tilt movements that are slow enough not to distract viewers. Once a subject is acquired, the camera adjusts framing smoothly as they move across marks or interact with other contributors. This allows a single operator to supervise several cameras while the CR-N400 maintains a consistent primary shot.
What is involved in setting up auto tracking on the CR-N400?
Auto tracking is configured through Canon’s control software using the Auto Tracking App RA-AT001 (Lite), with an upgrade path to RA-AT001 for more control. During setup, you define the area, subject behaviour and framing preferences so the camera knows how tightly to follow movement. Once these parameters are stored, the system can be recalled for recurring shows with minimal adjustment.
How does auto tracking interact with manual control during a production?
When an operator intervenes using a hardware controller or software panel, manual commands take priority over tracking. This makes it easy to override the automated movement for a specific shot, then return to tracking when needed. The handover is smooth enough that viewers are unlikely to notice the transition between automated and manual operation.
How suitable is the CR-N400 for large venues?
In larger rooms and arenas, the combination of 20x optical zoom, 40x advanced zoom in Full HD and tracking provides strong coverage from fixed positions. As long as the subject remains clearly visible and reasonably separated from other people, the tracking holds framing reliably. This makes the camera well suited to conferences, houses of worship and performance spaces where camera platforms cannot be positioned close to the stage.
Can the CR-N400 still be used effectively in multi-camera systems?
Yes, the camera is designed to sit comfortably alongside manually operated units in a multi-camera layout. Genlock and Time Code keep it synchronised, while IP control and SDI outputs feed standard switchers and control surfaces. In practice, many crews dedicate the CR-N400 with auto tracking to follow the main presenter, freeing operators to concentrate on alternative angles, cutaways and audience coverage.
