The Canon EOS 400D Digital SLR has a neat and uncomplicated body and performs well across a wide range of applications. The Canon EOS 400D Digital SLR has a neat and uncomplicated body and performs well across a wide range of applications. The EOS 400D was built for use in photographic situations where attention to detail is required, and is the first DSLR in Canon's range to offer the EOS Integrated Cleaning System.

Andy Rouse puts the EOS 400D to the test on location in Zambia. Read the full review here.

The Canon EOS 400D features:

  • 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor, enabling greater clarity and larger prints
  • EOS Integrated Cleaning System stops dust spoiling your photos
  • Bright 2.5” LCD screen with 160 degree viewing angle for easy reviewing of images
  • High-precision 9 point AF system
  • Choose from 6 Picture Styles or create your own
  • DIGIC II image processor with rapid 0.2 second start-up
  • Digital Photo Professional RAW processing software
  • Compact and Lightweight body at under 600g
  • Compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlites, such as the 430EX

Improved Performance
As the successor to the EOS 350D, the Canon EOS 400D provides a number of developments. “The EOS 400D is the natural choice for entry level Canon photographers wanting to get their first DSLR,” said Andy Rouse, acclaimed nature photographer and Wex Photo Video Expert Reviewer, “it is a nice progression from the 350D and a good upgrade choice.”

In addition to the EOS Integrated Cleaning System, the Canon EOS 400D offers 20% higher resolution than the EOS 350D, climbing from 8.0 Megapixels to 10.1 Megapixels, using the hi-sensitivity, hi-speed, low-noise CMOS technology found in all six of Canon’s EOS Digital models.

The larger 2.5” hi-resolution LCD screen is the brightest in the range of EOS cameras and displays key shooting and user interface information along with image playback. “This is a really useful feature,” continues Andy, “I did not have to waste time hunting for these settings, the display shows everything that you need to know at a glance, including shutter speed, aperture, ISO, AF point selection, white balance and remaining shots.”

The Canon EOS 400D has a 9-point AF system which provides the user with better accuracy and speed and has a super sensitive f/2.8 centre point, which in real terms, offers high performance even in low light situations. Maximum frame burst is almost doubled from 14 to 27 large JPEGs and from 5 to 10 RAW, even with the increased image resolution. (RAW files are the actual data taken directly from a digital camera’s image sensor.)

Dust Reduction
The EOS 400D is the first in the EOS range to incorporate the EOS Integrated Cleaning System. The System was created following research into the causes of dust in D-SLR cameras and combats the dust in three ways:

  • Reduce – internal mechanisms in the EOS 400D have been specially designed to minimise dust generation and the body cap has been redesigned to prevent dust generation through wear on the cap itself
  • Repel – anti-static technologies are applied to the low-pass filter which covers the front of the sensor, so as not to attract dust
  • Remove – hi-frequency vibrations from a self-cleaning sensor unit shake dust from the low pass filter for approximately one second after each start up. This feature is disabled immediately the shutter release is depressed and therefore does not interfere with instant shooting after power up

Canon has also developed an internal Dust Delete Data system, which maps the position of any visible dust on the sensor. After the shoot, the dust can be deleted with the aid of any of the latest Digital Photo Professional software. During his shoot in Zambia, Andy Rouse deliberately left the mirror up to attract more dust. “As far as I can tell, the sensor cleaning worked very well; my images are free from dust, which is an achievement after returning from a trip from Africa.”

The EOS advantage
The advantage of the EOS 400D is in the number of advanced features it inherits from higher-end EOS models, like the 30D and 5D. For example, the increase to a 9-point AF system is “noticeable,” says Andy. “It locked on to just about everything I tried it on, even with the outermost points selected.” Other advantages are Picture Style 9,999 image capacity folders and expanded Pictbridge functionality.

The same DIGIC II processor that can be found across the EOS range right through to the EOS-1 professional models is found on the Canon EOS 400D also. DIGIC II allows an almost instant start up time of 0.2 seconds, super quick clearing of the buffer between frame bursts and superior image quality through advanced rendering algorithms.

Easy to Upgrade
Upgrading to the EOS 400D is easy because Canon use the same intuitive user interface and basic layout of key features and functions as on other EOS models. Photographers are also able to use the same battery and Battery Grip BG-E3 as used on the EOS 350D, as well as continued support for all EF and EF-S lenses, EX Speedlites and EOS accessories.

Software
As with the entire EOS range, the EOS 400D comes with a comprehensive software suite including Digital Photo Professional (DPP), aimed at helping photographer’s workflow. DPP is a powerful RAW converter that provides complete RAW image processing control and integrates with camera features such as the Dust Delete Data and Picture Style. The Canon EOS 400D also comes with EOS Capture, Image/Zoom Browser and Photostitch. Canon offers 100MB of personal online space at CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, an online photo sharing service with each purchase.

The Canon EOS 400D is available in a variety of different kit formats and we offer a wide selection of great starter bundles as well as savings on popular accessories.
