The Canon Fisheye STM Lens is a fast, ultra-wide zoom introduced to the RF L-series with a 7-14mm fisheye optical design and a variable f2.8-3.5 aperture. The fisheye projection provides a field of view of up to 190°, with rendering that shifts from circular to diagonal across the zoom range. An STM focus drive with breathing suppression and a 15 cm close-focusing distance maintains stable framing and perspective for portraits, landscapes, and extreme angles.

What’s new?
The Canon RF 7-14mm f2.8-3.5L Fisheye STM Lens expands the RF L-series with a dedicated single-lens fisheye zoom with a bright, dynamic aperture range. Its 16-element, 11-group optical design includes five UD and two aspherical elements, allowing you to capture both circular and diagonal fisheye images without requiring additional accessories. This optical design delivers a 190° angle of view which also controls aberrations across the zoom range.
Operational updates include the addition of an STM focus drive with focus breathing suppression, improving framing stability during focus transitions. Additionally, a rear drop-in filter system for CPL and ND filters replaces traditional front-mounted filters which would interfere with the fisheye front element.
Perspective and Application
The 7-14mm fisheye projection provides an angle of view of up to 190°, revealing most of the surrounding scene, even when the camera position is restricted. This AoV is suitable for tight spaces where stepping back is not possible, as well as for situations where subject movement is unpredictable, and reframing is limited. Featuring a minimum focusing distance of 0.15m, the lens keeps people, objects, and foreground elements prominent while keeping the wider environment visible. This feature makes the lens suitable for action-oriented subjects, environmental portrait-style framing, expansive landscapes, night-sky astrophotography, and immersive capture where spatial context is as important as the subject itself.
Optical Design and Fisheye Projection
The Canon RF 7-14mm f2.8-3.5L Fisheye STM Lens features five UD and two aspherical elements that manage aberrations across the image circle as the field of view expands to 190°. An equidistant projection design produces circular fisheye rendering at wider focal lengths and diagonal fisheye rendering as the lens zooms in and out. This results in fisheye geometry which is selectable through the focal length rather than needing to change the lens for the correct
Aperture and Close Focusing
A variable f2.8-3.5 maximum aperture allows increased light transmission compared to other fisheye designs. The aperture affects exposure flexibility when working indoors or in low-light conditions. Its minimum focusing distance of 0.15m enables subjects to be positioned extremely close to the front element, producing exaggerated perspective effects. This combination supports deliberate distortion control in tight spaces where camera placement is restricted.
Autofocus and Framing Stability
The STM autofocus system delivers smooth, continuous movement. It integrates focus-breathing suppression, reducing angle-of-view changes as the focus shifts. This results in more stable framing during focus pulls, particularly when the lens is used for motion capture or when refocusing at close distances.
Hardware and Handling
The addition of a rear drop-in filter system allows CPL and ND filters to be inserted behind the optics, either individually or together. This kit includes a clear drop-in filter as standard. The design avoids front-mounted filters that are incompatible with fisheye front elements. The lens also incorporates a Lens Control Ring and a Lens Function Button, providing direct, on-lens access to assigned camera functions. These physical controls allow settings to be adjusted without entering camera menus, enabling responsive operation in confined spaces or when camera movement is limited.

FAQs:
Where does the RF 7-14mm f2.8-3.5L Fisheye STM sit within Canon’s fisheye and ultra-wide lineup?
The Canon RF 7-14mm Fisheye sits at the crossover between Canon’s fisheye and ultra-wide RF lenses. It offers a zoomable fisheye perspective, unlike fixed-view options such as the Canon RF 5.2mm f2.8L Dual Fisheye and Canon RF-S 3.9mm f3.5 STM Dual Fisheye, which are designed specifically for stereoscopic VR capture. Within the wider ultra-wide lineup, it sits below rectilinear lenses like the Canon RF 14mm f1.4L VCM, Canon RF 10-20mm f4L IS STM, Canon RF 14-35mm f4L IS USM, and Canon RF 15-35mm f2.8L IS USM, which prioritise straight-line rendering. The 7-14mm instead provides controlled fisheye distortion across a usable zoom range, positioning it as a creative ultra-wide option rather than a conventional architectural or landscape lens.
Does the Canon RF 7-14mm f2.8-3.5L Fisheye STM Lens accept filters?
The lens uses a rear drop-in filter system rather than a front-mounted filter system, allowing CPL and ND filters to be used individually or stacked together. This system maintains optical performance without interfering with the fisheye front element.
How does the lens produce fisheye images?
The fisheye perspective changes across the 7-14mm zoom range. Wider focal lengths produce circular fisheye images, while longer focal lengths produce diagonal fisheye coverage. The change is achieved by selecting the focal length.
How close can the Canon RF 7-14mm f2.8-3.5L Fisheye STM Lens focus?
The minimum focusing distance is 0.15m. This distance allows the photographer to position subjects very close to the lens, producing strong perspective exaggeration. This system is particularly effective in confined environments.
How does the lens work with APS-C cameras?
On APS-C cameras, the lens can provide diagonal fisheye coverage of approximately 8.7mm when the focal length aligns with the ‘C’ index mark. This feature enables fisheye rendering optimised for APS-C sensors, with projection behaviour that differs from full-frame operation.
How does 2D 180° VR capture work with this lens and EOS VR Utility?
At the wide end of the zoom range, the lens produces a circular fisheye image that contains a full 180° field of view. When used on a camera that supports Open Gate recording, such as the Canon EOS R6 Mark III, the full circular image is captured without cropping. EOS VR Utility can then convert this fisheye footage into an equirectangular 180° format during post-production. The result is monoscopic 2D 180° VR imaging, while the original fisheye footage remains available for non-VR use.
