High-resolution solar system imaging
The Celestron NexImage 20 Solar System Colour Imager is designed for the finer details, delivering 20 MP still images at 5240 x 3840 pixels and smooth AVI video of the Moon, planets, and Sun (with a solar filter). Whether you’re aiming to capture high-quality prints or share your results online, the resolution and frame quality ensure crisp imaging across a wide range of targets.
Advanced sensor performance
The Celestron NexImage 20 Solar System Imager’s AR2020 back-illuminated CMOS sensor is designed to maximise light capture even in less-than-ideal conditions. With 1.4 µm pixels on a 7.3 x 5.4 mm sensor and a sensitivity rating of 8.7 ke⁻/lux-sec, it records fine surface features with impressive clarity. High sensitivity makes it an excellent option for capturing subtle planetary details or surface textures on the lunar landscape.
Practical installation and connectivity
The NexImage 20 integrates directly into your telescope’s 1.25” eyepiece holder using the included nosepiece, removing the need for additional adapters. Connection to your Windows PC is straightforward via the supplied USB-A to USB-C cable, ensuring reliable data transfer and simple setup. iCap software is included with the imager, allowing direct control over exposure, gain, and frame rate.
Optimised imaging features
For planetary imaging, the Region of Interest (ROI) function enables you to crop to just your subject, boosting frame rates and delivering smoother video while keeping file sizes manageable, which speeds up post-processing. Beyond planetary imaging, the NexImage 20 also serves as a precise autoguider, helping to maintain accurate tracking during long-exposure astrophotography when used with additional guiding hardware, which is available separately.

FAQs:
Is the Celestron NexImage 20 Solar System Colour Imager colour or monochrome?
The NexImage 20 is a colour camera, allowing you to capture natural, full-colour images of the Moon, planets, and Sun (with a solar filter). This saves time compared to monochrome imaging, which often requires additional filters and processing steps. The built-in IR cutoff filter helps deliver accurate colour reproduction straight from the sensor.
What kind of connection and power does the Celestron NexImage 20 Solar System Colour Imager use?
As it is powered entirely via its high-speed USB 3.0 interface, the Celestron NexImage 20 does not require external power. The included 10-foot USB cable provides flexibility when positioning your laptop or PC near the telescope to supply power. Data transfer is fast and reliable, supporting higher frame rates for smooth planetary video capture.
How durable is the camera housing?
The NexImage 20 is built with a lightweight ABS body paired with an aluminium connection ring, ensuring both portability and strength. At only 57 g, it adds minimal weight to your telescope setup. Despite its compact size, the construction is designed to withstand regular use in the field.
Does the Celestron NexImage 20 Solar System Colour Imager support advanced imaging software?
Yes, the NexImage 20 is compatible with a variety of programs, including Celestron’s iCap, IC Capture, DirectShow, and oaCapture. This broad software support allows you to tailor your imaging setup to your own preferences. Each platform offers control over key settings, including exposure, gain, and frame rate.
