The DJI RS 5 is a lightweight commercial stabiliser built to support mirrorless camera setups up to 3kg with confident, controlled movement. It balances quickly with fine-tuning knobs and a low-friction axis design, then locks and unlocks automatically as you power up or down. Stronger motors and DJI’s latest stabilisation algorithm keep shots steady while walking, running, or switching to native vertical shooting.
DJI RS 5 Key Features:
- Next-generation RS-series gimbal stabiliser for mirrorless camera rigs up to 3kg
- Compact gimbal body reduces fatigue during extended handheld operation
- Stronger motors improve control during fast movement and direction changes
- Fine-tuning knobs allow precise, low-friction axis balancing
- Automated axis locks secure gimbal during power-off and transport
- Native vertical shooting switches orientation without rebalancing
- Z-axis indicator helps refine walking technique for steadier footage
- Dual-layer quick-release plates retain balance between tripod and gimbal
- One-hour charging supports longer shooting days with less downtime
- Bluetooth shutter control removes cables for cleaner, faster rig changes
- RSA port supports handles, motors, and third-party control accessories
- Subject tracking with optional Enhanced Intelligent Tracking Module
Stronger motors and efficient power
Motor torque increases significantly over the previous generation, which you notice most when accelerating, stopping, or shooting vertically. The 5th-generation stabilisation algorithm smooths out walking and light running without feeling floaty, keeping movement controlled rather than over-corrected. This balance helps footage feel grounded, especially with heavier zooms. With the included battery grip, battery performance has also been improved when compared to the RS 4. A full charge takes around an hour with a compatible fast charger and offers a longer runtime, reducing downtime between charges and supporting longer shooting sessions.
Faster balancing and setup
Balancing feels predictable thanks to the fine-tuning knobs on each axis. Minor adjustments are easy to make without the camera drifting past centre, and the low-friction axis with Teflon interlayers lets heavier setups settle smoothly. The dual-layer quick-release plates help here too, retaining balance memory when moving between the gimbal and a tripod, so you don't have to start from scratch each time. Once balanced, the system holds its position reliably, reducing the need for repeated adjustments.
For a quick setup, the second-generation automated axis locks engage as soon as the gimbal powers down and release automatically on start-up, making packing, transport, and quick resets smoother. Built-in Bluetooth shutter control also removes the need for camera control cables with supported cameras, keeping the rig cleaner and faster to set up.
Vertical shooting without the hassle
Switching from horizontal to vertical shooting is made simple with third-generation native vertical shooting. You loosen a single knob, rotate the plate, and lock it back in place without rebalancing the tilt or pan axes. This simple adjustment makes it practical to move between horizontal and vertical delivery during the same shoot, rather than treating it as a separate setup, for tailoring content to different platforms.
Accessories for enhanced tracking and control
A range of optional accessories allows the RS 5 to be configured for different working styles and crews. DJI offers an enhanced intelligent tracking module that adds touchscreen subject selection and on-gimbal tracking, along with an electronic briefcase handle that provides direct gimbal and camera control from a low-angle grip. Other optional additions include focus motors for lens control, video transmission for remote monitoring and control, and tethered or ring-style handles for two-handed operation, all of which connect via RS communication ports.

FAQs:
How much weight can the DJI RS 5 support?
The RS 5 supports camera and lens combinations up to 3kg. This maximum load comfortably covers most full-frame mirrorless bodies paired with standard f2.8 zooms or compact cine primes. Proper balancing is still essential for achieving optimal stabilisation and battery performance.
Does the RS 5 require rebalancing when switching to vertical shooting?
No. The native vertical shooting design allows you to rotate the mounting plate and lock it back in place without rebalancing the tilt or pan axes. This makes switching between social media-focused or portrait formats quick and predictable on set.
Is subject tracking built into the gimbal?
Tracking requires the separate RS Enhanced Intelligent Tracking Module. Once attached, tracking is controlled directly from the gimbal’s touchscreen and works for single people, vehicles, or pets under suitable conditions.
How lightweight is the RS 5?
The RS 5 weighs 1.193kg, including the Upper and Lower Quick-Release Plates and screws. When you’re ready to film, it weighs just 1.46kg with the Battery Grip and quick-release plates. The weight makes it comfortable to handle when moving between shots, working handheld for extended periods, or packing the gimbal into a smaller kit bag without stripping it down.
What is the difference between the previous-generation RS 4 and the RS 5?
The RS 5 builds on the RS 4 with several measurable upgrades. Peak motor torque increases by around 50%, giving the RS 5 more headroom with heavier mirrorless zooms and better stability during faster movement. Charging is also quicker, with a full charge achievable in around 1 hour, roughly 60% faster than RS 4, and battery standby time increases by about 15%. The RS 5 also adds hardware refinements such as a Z-axis indicator and updated automated axis locks, while retaining the same 3kg payload.
