Expanded Laowa 12mm f2.8 Lite Zero-D FF MF Lens for Sony E Key Features:
Ultra-wide angle of view
At 12mm on full frame, this lens delivers an expansive 122° angle of view while maintaining a rectilinear rendering. The Zero-D optical design keeps barrel distortion to a minimum, so architectural lines remain straight without relying heavily on software correction. For interiors, property work or structured landscapes, this control over geometry is critical. This lens allows you to work confidently at the edges of the frame, knowing that verticals and horizontals will remain consistent and natural.
Fast f2.8 aperture for low-light
A maximum aperture of f2.8 gives the lens practical flexibility in low-light conditions. For astrophotography, it helps maintain manageable ISO levels and shorter shutter speeds, reducing the risk of star movement. In twilight cityscapes or dim interiors, it provides an extra margin before introducing additional lighting or support. Although depth of field is inherently broad at 12mm, closer focusing distances still allow subtle subject separation when required.
Close focusing and composition
With a minimum focusing distance of 14cm, the lens supports strong foreground emphasis. Placing elements close to the front of the frame creates pronounced depth and scale, a strength of working at this focal length. Manual focus complements this approach. It encourages deliberate composition and precise adjustment, particularly when balancing foreground detail with distant background elements in landscape or architectural scenes
Compact form with practical filter support
Weighing 377g, the Lite version integrates comfortably with modern mirrorless bodies. It remains well balanced for tripod work, handheld shooting, or use on gimbals, without introducing unnecessary bulk. The integrated 72mm filter thread is a practical advantage at this focal length. Standard ND and polarising filters can be fitted directly, simplifying long-exposure work and reflection control.

FAQs:
Does the Laowa 12mm f2.8 Lite Zero-D show distortion at 12mm?
For a lens this wide, distortion is extremely well controlled. Straight lines remain straight, which is critical for architecture and interior work. In most practical situations, you can rely on the optical design without applying heavy correction in post.
Is this lens fully manual?
Yes. This version is manual focus only, and aperture is set on the lens itself. That suits careful work such as landscape, architecture and astrophotography, where focus is typically set manually and refined. The focus ring provides direct, predictable control, which many photographers prefer for ultra-wide compositions.
How suitable is this lens for astrophotography?
Very suitable, particularly for wide-field night sky work. The 12mm focal length allows you to include expansive skies and foreground context, while the f2.8 aperture helps keep ISO levels under control. The Zero-D design also maintains good edge structure, which is important for keeping stars clean across the frame. As with most ultra-wides, careful manual focusing at infinity is essential for the best results.
Is this lens suitable for astrophotography?
The 12mm focal length captures a broad section of the night sky, and the f2.8 aperture gathers enough light for shorter exposures. Combined with improved sharpness and reduced chromatic aberration, it performs well for night landscapes and astro scenes.
