Crafted For Quality Cinematography
The Laowa 12mm T2.9 from Venus Optics is a real trailblazer in the realm of creative cinematography. No other cine lenses really come close to its compact size, light-weight feel, fast speeds, and close to ZERO distortion. You can even utilise this Laowa lens with gimbals and stabilisers, ideal for high-value vloggers, product videos, corporate jobs, travel videos. If you are looking to take the leap to pro-level cinematography in any form, this lens is worth every penny.
A key point of interest with this particular Laowa lens is its super-close focus ability. It has the ability to focus from 18cm from the sensor, and approximately 10cm from the front element to the desired subject; highly adaptable to all forms of image-making. Also, both the focus and aperture rings are built up of industry-standard 0.8 pitch gearing. This means that standard cine follow focus motors are compatible with this ultra-wide-angle lens. When incorporated with cinema cameras, you can therefore attain smooth focus pulls with the 12mm T2.9 - a testament to Laowa's standing as such a high-quality cine lens producer.
Full-Frame Coverage
The image-circle provides full-frame coverage, as well as covering Vista Vision - which is slightly bigger than full-frame, used on the Red Monstro 8K camera. The Laowa 12mm T2.9 also covers ARRI ALEXA LF sized sensors, cementing its place as a unique addition to any cinematographer's collection. An ideal candidate for professional-use with film, TV, documentary, commercial, and music video productions.
Ultra-Wide Angle
With most ultra-wide-angle lenses on the market, you suffer from an optical distortion rate from 2-5%, causing straight lines to bend, and the ‘captured image' to vary slightly from the ‘true image'. For pro-level cinematographers and landscape/architectural photographers, this can have detrimental effects on the final image. Laowa Zero-D lenses are corrected to achieve a close-to-zero distortion rate that is outstanding for such an ultra-wide lens. The distortion rate is measured from shooting objects at infinity focus (distortion rate can vary for shorter camera-to-object distances).
As the fastest full-frame, non-fisheye 12mm lens on the market, the Laowa 12mm T2.9 lens covers an ultra-wide 122° angle of view. By doing so, it gives creative freedom to landscape and architectural photographers that just isn't available with other lenses. The ultra-wide aspects of this lens are also great for panning, panoramic photography and various video applications. The optical design consists of 16 lens elements in 10 groups, with 3 Extra-Low Dispersion glass elements and 2 Aspherical Elements. As such an intricate constructed wide-angle lens, the Laowa 12mm T2.9 Zero-D delivers high resolution from corner to corner, even when opened widest (T2.9 / f/2.8). Chromatic aberration is also limited to ensure reliable performance.
