The Laowa 24mm f14 Macro Probe Lens provides so many exciting opportunities for all image-makers. The fact that the front barrel is both waterproof and has an LED light mounted to the tip means that you can shoot in both a controlled environment, (tank/pool) and in something more adventurous like a slow stream or river. This is ideal for content creators when shooting product videos, where the long tubular barrel efficiently glides through tight spaces, under/over objects, and can even be used with animals. An example of this would be photographing dangerous reptiles, placing you at a safe distance from the subject whilst capturing images unique to the Laowa 24mm f14 Macro Probe Lens - It’s also incredibly lightweight for a lens measuring 408mm in length.
The Technical Talk
This lens has some serious tricks up its sleeve when it comes to the technicalities behind being able to capture such unique perspectives. The 24mm f14 Macro Probe Lens is suitable for videographers and photographers, is a full-manual lens (manual aperture and focus dials), and is full-frame compatible (image circle covers Super 35mm + smaller sensors). As the world’s first consumer lens which has the ability to focus 2:1 macro to infinity with a "bug-eye" perspective, this Laowa lens is pretty special. The wide-angle design offers increased depth of field, ideal for extreme close-ups whilst producing greater background detail (a step-up from conventional telephoto macro lenses). Most traditional macro lenses on the market have a long focal length (from 60mm to 120mm) to allow a subject to fill the frame in isolation. The Laowa 24mm, however, gives incredibly close focus to the subject (20mm at 2:1 life-size reproduction) to achieve intense detail and texture, whilst utilising a unique ‘bug-eye’ perspective (84° angle of view). This allows the surrounding environment to also be included in the shot for a more dynamic, exciting final image or video - The creative possibilities for macro photography and videography are endless.
You have so much creative freedom when shooting with the Laowa 24mm probe lens, like inserting the barrel into the undergrowth to capture photos of wildlife, insert the lens into a drinks glass or plunge it underwater to gain exciting b-roll for a new fizzy drink product video. The key to this lens being able to capture such unique perspectives is that it enables wide-angle views with a wider depth of field at extreme close-up.
