The Laowa 4.5-10mm f2.8 CF Zoom Fisheye is a compact manual-focus fisheye lens for Canon RF-mount cameras, pairing a 4.5-10mm range with a constant f2.8 aperture. Turning the zoom ring shifts the view from a circular 180° fisheye image to a frame-filling diagonal look. The 10cm close-focusing distance means nearby subjects loom against the wider scene, giving the lens its strong bug-eye perspective for crystal-ball effects, stitched panoramas, exaggerated close-ups, and de-fished ultra-wide images.

Laowa 4.5-10mm f2.8 CF Zoom Fisheye Lens Key Features:

  • APS-C and Micro Four Thirds fisheye zoom captures circular and diagonal views
  • 4.5-10mm range shifts framing from circular image to diagonal fisheye
  • Constant f2.8 aperture keeps exposure steady throughout the zoom range
  • Parfocal construction holds the focus position steady as the focal length changes
  • 10cm close focus enlarges foreground subjects against broad background detail
  • 0.27x max magnification captures close details with visible surrounding context
  • 180° wide-end view suits crystal ball effects and stitched panoramas
  • De-fishing correction turns curved frames into wider rectilinear-style images
  • 13-element, 9-group optics use high-refractive and ED glass to reduce dispersion
  • Manual aperture ring sets f2.8 to f22 aperture directly on the lens
  • Manual focus ring gives direct control with a 77° focus throw
  • Compact 338g body balances easily on smaller crop-format camera setups
  • Ø29mm image circle covers APS-C and Micro Four Thirds formats

Expanded Laowa 4.5-10mm f2.8 CF Zoom Fisheye Lens Key Features:

Two fisheye looks from one zoom ring

The main draw of this lens is how the zoom ring changes the image's shape. At the wide end, it pulls a 180° view into a circular fisheye image, so skies, interiors and unusual foregrounds sit inside a rounded frame. As the ring turns towards 10mm, the image grows until it fills the frame, with a diagonal fisheye effect that preserves the curved geometry while using more of the sensor area. This feature gives two very different fisheye looks from the same camera position without removing the lens from the body.

Panoramas and corrected ultra-wide views

The 180° field of view captures a large portion of the scene in each frame, making the lens useful for stitched 360° panoramas and immersive interiors. Because each exposure already covers so much ground, the camera needs fewer positions to build a full view, leaving fewer joins to manage later. The same fisheye files can also be de-fished in post-production, where software pulls the curved projection into an ultra-wide rectilinear-style image. That means a single shot can provide both the rounded fisheye version and a straighter, wider view for more practical use.

Close focus with exaggerated scale

The 10cm minimum focusing distance changes how subjects sit in the frame. Move the front of the lens close to a skateboard, face, flower or architectural detail, and the near subject grows while the background stretches away behind it. At its closest distance, the lens reaches a maximum magnification of 0.27x, so small details can occupy more space in the composition while the surrounding scene remains visible. This is where the fisheye effect feels most physical: the lens is close, the foreground expands, and the environment still wraps around it.

Steady exposure and focus while zooming

The constant f2.8 aperture keeps the same maximum light transmission across the 4.5-10mm range. When you zoom during video, the exposure does not dip just because the focal length changes, which keeps the shot visually consistent. The parfocal construction keeps the focus point fixed as the zoom ring turns, so a subject that is sharp at one end of the range remains sharp as the framing changes. For low-light, night scenes, and action, f2.8 also allows more room to use a faster shutter speed or a lower ISO.

Small, fully manual handling

At 338g and 59.3mm long, the lens keeps smaller crop-format cameras from feeling front-heavy. This is especially useful when working handheld, mounting a camera on a small gimbal, or balancing a compatible drone setup, because less weight at the front makes the whole rig easier to settle. Focus, zoom, and aperture are controlled by dedicated rings on the lens, with 77° of focus throw and 42° of aperture throw for direct mechanical adjustment. Inside, the 13-element, 9-group optical design uses one high-refractive element and four ED elements, which bend light through the compact barrel while reducing colour separation across the wide fisheye view.

FAQs:

Is the Laowa 4.5-10mm f2.8 CF Zoom Fisheye Lens suitable for APS-C, Micro Four Thirds or full-frame cameras?

This lens is compatible with APS-C and Micro Four Thirds cameras. Some mount versions, such as Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z and L-Mount, can physically attach to full-frame bodies, but the lens does not cover a full-frame sensor. On those cameras, use crop mode where available so the sensor records the image area that the lens is made to cover. For full-frame users, it is best thought of as a crop-format fisheye zoom rather than a full-frame fisheye lens.

Does the circular fisheye effect look the same on APS-C and Micro Four Thirds?

The lens can produce a full circular fisheye image on both APS-C and Micro Four Thirds cameras. On Micro Four Thirds, that circular look appears at the wide end, while APS-C cameras reach the complete circle at around 5mm. The difference comes from how each sensor size sits behind the same image circle. As the zoom ring moves towards 10mm, the circular image grows into a frame-filling diagonal fisheye view.

What does de-fishing do with images from this lens?

De-fishing corrects the fisheye distortion into an ultra-wide, rectilinear-style view. The process stretches the edges and alters the geometry, so straight lines appear less bowed than in the original fisheye frame. Because the lens starts with such a wide angle of view, the corrected image can still include a very broad scene. This feature is useful when you want a stylised fisheye image and a straighter wide version from the same shot.

How is the Laowa 4.5-10mm f2.8 CF Zoom Fisheye Lens controlled?

The Laowa 4.5-10mm f2.8 CF Zoom Fisheye uses manual focus, manual zoom and a physical aperture ring. You set focus by turning the focus ring, change the fisheye effect with the zoom ring, and adjust exposure or depth of field directly from f2.8 to f22 on the aperture ring. This gives the lens a simple mechanical feel, which suits both slow, careful framing and quick creative changes. For close-up work, focus peaking on compatible cameras makes it easier to see exactly where the sharpest detail sits.

Can I use filters and flashes with the Laowa 4.5-10mm f2.8 CF Zoom Fisheye Lens?

Standard front-screw-in filters do not fit this lens because it lacks a front filter thread. Exposure control mainly comes from aperture, shutter speed and ISO, rather than a front ND or polariser. Similarly, a built-in camera flash can cast a barrel shadow because the fisheye front end sits close to the flash path. An external flash places the light away from the lens body, so the shadow is less likely to fall across the image.
