How to use the Leica 70-200mm f2.8 Vario-Elmarit-SL ASPH Lens:
Lens construction
As with all Leica lenses, we expect the best. The Leica 70-200mm f2.8 Vario-Elmarit-SL ASPH Lens exhibits all the hallmarks of Leica’s industry-leading status. The lens is built up of 20 lenses in 15 groups including three aspherical lenses specifically designed to help correct imperfections such as chromatic aberrations and field curvature, resulting in sharper, clearer images with fewer distortions. We also see the use of Leica’s Hydrophobe Aqua-Dura lens coatings on the outer lens surfaces to help protect them from dirt, liquid and scratches.
AF Performance
The Leica 70-200mm f2.8 Vario-Elmarit-SL ASPH Lens features an impressive AF system that has been designed to match the optical quality of the lens structure. When paired with the likes of the SL-2 and SL-3, this system offers exceptionally fast and near-silent autofocusing. This is made all the more impressive thanks to Leica’s optical image stabilisation system (O.I.S.). Combining this optical stabilisation with the SL-3’s in-body camera stabilisation, for example, results in pin-sharp images and video footage.
The “Lens Trinity”
This lens arrives as the third lens of what Leica calls a “powerful trinity series” of lenses for the Leica SL-System. This trinity is comprised of the 70-200mm, the Leica 14-24mm f2.8 Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL ASPH Lens, and the Leica 24-70mm f2.8 Vario-Elmarit-SL Asph Lens. Leica’s thinking is that this series makes it possible to photograph and film almost anything from 14mm ultra-wide angle to 200mm telephoto, all with a constant f2.8 aperture. This means you’ll experience the exceptional image quality of Leica’s SL-Sytem camera, its optics and an enhanced depth of field for any photographic or video discipline.
Extend to 400mm
Announced along with this telephoto lens is the Leica Extender L 2.0x. Pairing this teleconverter with this lens allows you to double the range, extending your reach to 400mm without compromising on detail, sharpness or overall performance.
