Optical Structure

As you’d expect from any Leica optics, the Leica 75mm f2 APO-Summicron SL Asph Lens exhibits an advanced optical structure, which is how you’re able to capture such a high level of image quality, sharpness and colour accuracy. This lens is characterised by its Leica-standard look and portraiture focal length, and this is achieved with a structure that’s made up of 11 glass elements, arranged into 9 groups.

Within these 11 elements, Leica has used an aspherical element that significantly reduces the appearance of distortions and spherical aberrations, resulting in improved sharpness and colour accuracy. Additionally, the lens features an Apochromatic design, using anomalous partial dispersion glass that suppresses chromatic aberrations throughout the aperture range and therefore, increases colour fidelity and contrast. Finally, further aiding contrast and colour fidelity, Leica has applied multi-layer coatings to specific elements that also significantly reduce surface reflections, flare and ghosting, even in backlit conditions.

Expressive Control

As mentioned, you can see the true potential of this lens when shooting portraiture. Lending itself to this specific photographic discipline is its wide, bright and fast maximum f2 aperture. Having this maximum aperture allows for truly expressive control over depth of field, perfect for selective focusing found in dramatic portraiture. Of course, this aperture also allows for excellent low-light performance, and what’s more, the lens has a minimum focusing distance of just 50cm and a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:5 meaning you can tailor this lens to other types of photography, too.

Aiding your shooting is the Dual Syncro Drive stepping motor. This is seen in many Leica SL lenses and delivers impressively quick, accurate and near-silent autofocus performance when used in both stills photography and videography. Helping this performance is floating elements system and internal focusing design that offers complete consistency through the 50cm to infinity focusing range. Of course, this system is accompanied by a full-time manual focus override for those times where you need a creative touch.

Again, with most Leica SL lenses, you’re afforded an effective weather-sealed design. This design offers protection against dust and moisture, allowing you to shoot in adverse shooting conditions without fear of damaging your lenses. In addition, the Leica 75mm f2 APO-Summicron SL Asph Lens features a water-repellent AquaDura coating on the front and rear optical surfaces which protect from moisture and other elements. Can I use this on APS-C L-mount camera bodies?

Whilst this lens is designed for use on full-frame L-mount camera bodies, this short telephoto lens can also be mounted on APS-C models where it provides a 112.5mm equivalent focal length.

Is this lens stabilised?

This lens does not feature image stabilisation. However, you can make use of the in-body image stabilisation found in many compatible camera bodies e.g. the Leica SL2.
