This is achieved with an intricate arrangement of 23 glass elements ordered into 17 lens groups, including the use of 7 Anomalous Partial Dispersion glass elements. Image quality is increased by its internal focusing and zooming. There are 7 moving groups, including two dedicated focusing elements that are driven by linear stepping motors and this provides smooth and fast focusing and zooming throughout the focal range. Additionally, the lens features a strong optical image stabilisation system that compensates for up to 3.5 stops of camera shake. Meeting Leica’s incredible build quality, this lens is fully dust and water-proof as well as featuring Leica's AquaDura hydrophobic coating on the front & rear elements.

The Optical Makeup

This lens, like each and every Leica lens, features an advanced and highly intricate set of glass elements that enable such a high level of image quality. For the 90-280mm telephoto zoom range (compatible with both full-frame and APS-C L-mount models where it has a 135-420mm equivalent focal length range), the lens is made up of 23 high-quality glass elements that are arranged in 17 lens groups. Within these elements are seven anomalous partial dispersion elements which have been used to significantly reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the entire zoom range as well as increasing the overall colour accuracy.

In addition to the optical makeup is the aperture. This fast, wide and bright aperture system provides a maximum of f2.8-4 and a minimum f22, of which you’re able to have enhanced selective control of depth of field as well as being ideal for shooting in less than ideal lighting conditions.

AutoFocus & Image Stabilisation

This is well suited to the likes of the Leica SL2, this lens features an advanced autofocus system and a powerful image stabiliser. The AF system is powered by a stepping motor with linear positioning which results in super-smooth, silent and highly accurate autofocus performance, and the minimum confusing distance is 60cm at the 90mm position and 140cm at the 280mm focal position. Furthering the focusing performance is the dual internal focusing design that uses two individual elements for focusing, and this internal mechanism complements the internal zoom design maintaining the size of the lens as well as prevents the filter ring from rotating during zooming.

Next up is the optical image stabilisation system. Again, this is well suited to the likes of the SL2 which features its own in-body stabilisation. The system in place within this lens will compensate for up to 3.5 stops of camera shake which results in sharper handheld shooting as well as enabling you to more confidently use slower shutter speeds. This is particularly effective with the focal range of this lens as accidental camera shake is much more obvious at longer focal ranges.

Designed for all Weather

Maintaining the impressively high-quality construction that’s expected of Leica optics, the Leica 90-280mm f2.8-4 APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL Lens has been built with full-weather-proofing, protecting from dust and moisture. Additionally, the front and rear optical surfaces feature a water-repellent AquaDura coating which protects from moisture and other elements. These design choices allow you to use this lens in adverse and undesirable weather conditions where other lenses suffer from the elements.

The lens comes with a removable rotating tripod collar which allows you to confidently use this lens atop a tripod for increased stability, as well as featuring 90° position markings for intuitive switching from horizontal to versatile shooting. Finally, the lens comes lens hood that helps to prevent stray light from entering the lens that would result in ghosting and flare.
