The Neumann M 147 Tube is a large-diaphragm studio condenser microphone with a cardioid polar pattern. The head amplifier combines the vintage, classic tube circuitry with an advanced solid-state output stage for the “analogue” sound character. Inherited from the legendary predecessors, the U 47 and the M 49, this microphone delivers very low inherent self-noise and a wide dynamic range.
Neumann M 147 Tube UK Key Features:
- Inherits the large-diaphragm design from the predecessors U 47 and the M 49
- Features a tube circuitry for low self-noise
- The condenser capsule has a cardioid polar pattern
- Delivers a more “analogue” sound character
- Known for the resulting rich and warm sound
- Allows long cables runs of up to 300 metres without any transmission loss
- Produces a direct sound with unrestricted bass response
- Suited well for vocals and close miking of instruments
- Has a low self-noise of 12 dB-A and a maximum SPL of 114 dB
- Distortion rises to 5% THD for louder sound sources and an SPL of 134 dB
- Includes an N149A power supply unit for a balanced transformerless output
- Features a flat frequency response to the upper mid-range
- Can be used to records instruments like piano, string and wind instruments
- Minimises off-axis noise caused by monitors, room ambience or instruments
- The tube amplifies the capsule signal by 10 dB
Expanded Neumann M 147 Tube UK Key Features:
Tube Circuitry
Inheriting the design of the legendary predecessors like U 47 and the M 49, the M 147 microphone combines the tube circuit with a solid-state large diaphragm. It maintains a low self-noise of 12 dB-A and provides a warm, natural sound reproduction. This tube microphone reinstates an “analogue” sound character and offers a wide dynamic range. Neumann has brought about a modern element to the vintage sound by adding a transformer-less output stage instead of the earlier-used transformer-coupled output stage. A specially selected subminiature triode in the tube circuit amplifies the capsule signal.
Wide Range of Applications
The condenser capsule of the microphone has a cardioid pickup pattern that minimises off-axis noise. The distinctive mid-range focus is well-suited for stage vocals and speech applications such as film dubbing and voice-over. The low self-noise enables you to use it as a spot microphone for fairly close miking of solo instruments such as a piano, wind or string instruments. It has a maximum SPL capability of 114 dB but can be used with louder sound sources as well. The distortion rises slowly to 5% THD for an SPL of 134 dB and deliberately creates a sense of loudness to mimic the vintage analogue recordings.
Electrical Features
The M 147 tube uses an impedance converter and can be distinguished by the low self-noise level of 12 dB-A/24 dB CCIR weighted. The transformer-less output stage used for the same enables long cable runs of up to 300 metres and ensures lossless signal transmissions. It maintains a direct sound with unrestricted bass response. The tube circuitry amplifies the capsule’s signal by 10 dB and prevents any possible influences.
Operational Stability
Both, the condenser capsule and tube circuit, are shock-mounted to prevent any structure-borne noise. The wide dynamic range of the microphone produces extremely low-frequency signals. To avoid any possible signal degradation, an additional EA 1 elastic suspension and a WS 87 windscreen can be used. The microphone is sensitive to unwanted LF interference and thus, an additional pop screen is recommended to use during close miking of vocals.
