The Neumann TLM series microphones feature a transformerless (TLM) circuit for open and transparent sound reproduction. Even at high signal levels, it helps in maintaining a full, unrestricted bass transmission. The high SPL capability of up to 141dB ensures recording of various instruments without clipping. Even without the two pad settings, the SPL capability can increase up to 153dB with pre-attenuation. The low self-noise of 10dB-A is much lower than the ambient noise in a very quiet recording studio, which helps in capturing clear sound without any unwanted distortion or noise. Two low-cut settings are available in this microphone to reduce rumble and compensate for the proximity effect in close-miking situations.

There is a navigation switch at the back that controls all the settings in one place: pad (0/–6 /–12dB), low cut (linear/40Hz/100Hz) and polar patterns. How can the navigation switch be used to control the settings?

The navigation switch at the back of the microphone can be used to adjust all the settings: pad, polar patterns, and low-cut filter. Pressing the switch in the centre position will activate the display, and the polar patterns can be selected by activating the switch upwards or downwards. A high-pass filter with a cutoff frequency of –3dB can be selected for 40Hz or 100Hz by activating the switch towards the right, and the pre-attenuation of –6dB or –12dB can be set by activating the switch towards the left.

How can noise interference be suppressed?

The frequency response of the microphone extends below 20Hz and is sensitive to low-frequency interference such as structure-borne noise or the wind. An additional pop screen, elastic suspension, or foam windscreen can be used to suppress the noise interference.
