What are the key Components of a Rig?

A full kit will be made up of:

Top Handle

Top Handle: This makes picking your rigged camera out of your kit bag easy, and will offer secure mounting points for monitors and audio accessories.

side handle

Side Handle: For smaller camera set-ups, a good quality side handle will add stability for handheld shooting, along with extra mounting points, whilst some even include extra battery power.

cage

Cage: This is the frame that your camera will sit in. These offer multiple mounting points and extra protection for your camera, and in most cases the best cages are build specifically for your camera system.

bars support

Bars Support: Adding 15mm support bars is essential for adding a Follow Focus and Matte Box to your set-up. Full rig systems usually include these, but if you’re building a bespoke system you’ll need to select a suitable bars support block and bars.

shoulder pad

Shoulder Pad: For more long-form handheld jobs, its useful to have the option of putting the camera rig on your shoulder for more comfort and stability. For shoulder-mounted rigs, you’ll also need to add handles towards the front of the rig.

How do I build up my cage?

  • Select a brand and make sure all of your key components are from that brand.
  • Select a cage that is designed for your camera, then a top handle and side handle.
  • If you plan to use a monitor/recorder, select a sturdy mounting option.
  • If you want a full rig, consider looking at kit options that include all key components already.
