With the introduction of the 15mm f1.4 DC Contemporary Lens, Sigma refines its APS-C wide-angle prime series with a wider view and a significantly lighter build. The 13-element, 11-group optical design includes one FLD element, three SLD elements and three aspherical elements to maintain edge clarity while suppressing sagittal coma flare when wide open. A stepping motor drives the lightweight focus group for faster, quieter autofocus performance, and the reduced length and weight make this lens feel more natural on modern APS-C mirrorless bodies.

What’s new?
The Sigma 15mm f1.4 DC Contemporary Lens follows the earlier 16mm f1.4 DC DN | Contemporary with a slightly wider 15mm focal length and a more compact mechanical structure. The 13-element, 11-group layout refines the positioning of FLD, SLD and aspherical elements to maintain edge performance while suppressing sagittal coma flare at wide apertures. In use, point light sources retain a cleaner shape toward the edges when shooting at f1.4, particularly in night photography.
Sigma also states that the lens is approximately 30% shorter and 50% lighter than its predecessor. That reduction changes how the lens feels on APS-C mirrorless bodies, making it easier to keep this lens mounted as an everyday wide-angle option and more manageable for extended handheld or gimbal-based shooting. Focus breathing has also been minimised, and the stepping motor delivers responsive, low-noise autofocus. These improvements emphasise a movement toward portability and practical usability, in line with how APS-C systems are becoming smaller and easier to carry.
Refined Contemporary series optics
Strong optical performance remains central to this f1.4 DC design, but with a greater emphasis on efficiency and portability. The 13-element, 11-group construction incorporates one FLD element, three SLD elements and three aspherical elements to control chromatic aberration and sagittal coma flare at f1.4. In use, this keeps point light sources more consistent toward the edges of the frame when shooting wide open, where fast wide-angle lenses can otherwise show corner distortion.
The optical layout has also been configured to reduce flare and ghosting. By limiting internal reflections within a compact barrel, contrast remains steadier when bright light sources enter the frame. Backlit scenes retain clearer highlight definition without excessive contrast loss.
The 9-blade rounded diaphragm maintains a circular shape even as it stops down. Combined with the aberration control, this build offers smoother transitions and rounder specular highlights, supporting natural subject separation even at wider angles.
Autofocus performance
Autofocus on the Sigma 15mm f1.4 DC Contemporary lens is driven by a stepping motor that moves the lightweight focus group with minimal mechanical noise. This system supports fast stills acquisition and smoother, quieter transitions during video recording. Focus breathing has also been minimised through an optical layout refinement, reducing angle-of-view changes during refocusing. This helps maintain more consistent framing during focus pulls, particularly when shifting between foreground and mid-distance subjects.
Compact form factor
Sigma states the 15mm f1.4 DC Contemporary lens is approximately 30% shorter and 50% lighter than its predecessor. The reduced length shifts the centre of gravity closer to the camera body, improving balance on APS-C mirrorless systems and making the lens easier to carry for extended periods. An aperture ring also provides direct control over aperture with clear tactile feedback. Weighing less than 250g, this lens is a stable option for handheld shooting and is well-suited to smaller gimbals and travel tripods.
Durability and field use
Key joints and control areas on the 15mm f1.4 DC Contemporary lens are sealed within a dust- and splash-resistant structure to reduce moisture and particulate ingress during outdoor work. The front element is treated with a water- and oil-repellent coating, making it easier to clean and helping maintain contrast when shooting in light rain. The supplied LH612-01 petal hood also attaches securely, shading the front element from stray light and providing practical protection during transport.

FAQs:
Is this lens suitable for astrophotography?
The optical design of this lens places clear emphasis on suppressing sagittal coma flare at wide apertures. At f1.4, point light sources retain more consistent shape toward the edges of the frame, which is particularly relevant for night skies. The wide 15mm focal length on APS-C also allows more sky coverage without needing to stitch multiple frames.
Can this lens be used for vlogging?
The 15mm focal length provides a wide field of view on APS-C bodies, which allows comfortable framing at arm’s length. The stepping motor delivers quiet autofocus operation, and focus breathing has been minimised to reduce visible framing shifts during refocusing. The low weight also makes the lens easier to balance on compact gimbals.
Can I use filters on the Sigma 15mm f1.4 DC Contemporary Lens?
The Sigma 15mm f1.4 DC Contemporary lens features a 58mm front filter thread, allowing the use of standard screw-in filters, such as neutral density, circular polarising, and protective filters, without the need for adapters. Because focusing is internal, the front element does not rotate during operation, which makes it easier to use polarising or graduated ND filters without needing to readjust them after refocusing.
How does the 15mm fit within Sigma’s f1.4 DC series?
The 15mm lens sits toward the wide end of Sigma’s APS-C f1.4 DC Contemporary series. The range begins at 12mm for ultra-wide coverage, moves through 15mm for general wide-angle work, then continues with 23mm and 30mm for more natural perspectives, and 56mm for short telephoto reach.
Across the series, the lenses share a similar design philosophy: wide f1.4 apertures combined with compact mechanical construction suited to APS-C mirrorless systems. This allows photographers to build a consistent prime set from ultra-wide to mid-telephoto without introducing significant size or weight changes between focal lengths.
