Optical Design
The Sigma 17-40mm f1.8 DC Art features an advanced optical construction of 17 elements in 11 groups, including four SLD (Special Low Dispersion) and four aspherical elements. This layout suppresses axial chromatic aberration and sagittal coma flare, delivering high-resolution performance even at the widest f1.8 aperture. The internal zoom mechanism also ensures the lens maintains a fixed length throughout the zoom and focus range, providing better balance for gimbal use and enhancing durability by minimising the movement of external parts. The DC Art lens excels in preserving detail and contrast across the frame, making it ideal for both photography and videography.
Focus and Handling
Equipped with Sigma’s HLA (High-response Linear Actuator), the autofocus system of this Sigma lens delivers fast, near-silent performance. This ensures accurate results for stills and smooth, stable transitions for video, including single-operator gimbal setups. Minimised focus breathing maintains consistent framing when racking focus, supporting cinematic results. The Canon RF version includes a customisable control ring, allowing users to assign exposure-related or other camera functions based on Canon's system architecture.
Aperture Control
Unlike other versions, the Canon RF Mount model does not feature a traditional aperture ring. Instead, it is equipped with a control ring that can be assigned to aperture or other exposure parameters through the camera’s interface. This preserves compatibility with Canon’s mirrorless design philosophy while still allowing quick manual input. The absence of a physical ring results in a cleaner, simplified barrel profile.
Construction and Hardware
The Sigma 17-40mm f1.8 DC Art is built with mobility in mind, offering a compact and robust body that suits both handheld and rig-mounted shooting. Measuring 73 x 116mm and weighing just 535g, it is over 30% lighter than its predecessor, the 18-35mm f1.8 DC HSM Art, despite offering a broader focal range. A water- and oil-repellent coating protects the front element, and the overall build incorporates dust- and splash-resistant sealing. The internal zoom design helps maintain a consistent balance and centre of gravity during operation, enhancing reliability in both field and studio environments.

FAQs
What is the minimum focus distance of the Sigma 17-40mm f1.8 DC Art?
The lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 28 cm across the entire zoom range. This distance allows for tight framing and semi-macro compositions, particularly at the 40mm end of the lens. It’s well-suited for detail shots, tabletop photography, and close-up video work without requiring additional accessories.
What is the maximum magnification ratio of this lens?
At 40mm, the Sigma 17-40mm f1.8 DC Art Lens reaches a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.8. This provides moderate close-up ability, ideal for emphasising smaller subjects while still retaining a natural perspective. It’s a versatile range for mixed shooting environments.
What is the filter thread size of the Sigma 17-40mm f1.8 DC Art Lens?
The Sigma 17-40mm f1.8 DC Art Lens accepts 67mm threaded filters, a standard size that is easy to integrate with ND, UV, or polarising filters already in your kit. The non-rotating front element also makes it suitable for use with graduated and polarising filters.
Is the Sigma 17-40mm f1.8 DC Art Lens compatible with full-frame cameras?
The Sigma 17-40mm f1.8 DC Art Lens is compatible with full-frame Canon RF cameras, but it will automatically engage crop mode. The lens is specifically designed for APS-C sensors and will not cover the full-frame image circle. On Canon RF, the equivalent focal length is approximately 27.2-64mm.
Does the Canon RF version of the DC Art lens include a traditional aperture ring?
No, the Canon RF version replaces the physical aperture ring with a customisable control ring. This ring can be assigned to various camera functions such as aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation, depending on your camera’s settings. It does not feature click or lock switches like other mount versions.
