What’s new?

The Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG II Art Lens is a comprehensive redesign of its predecessor, with updates to both the optical and mechanical structure. A new 15-element, 12-group construction introduces four aspherical elements, two SLD elements and a newly developed AAC coating, improving aberration correction and reducing flare at wide apertures. A floating focus system maintains sharpness from the 0.28m minimum focus distance through to infinity, while dual HLA motors provide faster, quieter autofocus performance.

The lens body has also been refined, now approximately 14% shorter and 20% lighter than before, improving balance on mirrorless cameras. Handling updates include a revised aperture ring with click-on/off control, a lock switch to prevent unintended changes, and dual AFL buttons for customisable operation. Together, these changes represent a clear generational step forward in optical correction, responsiveness and physical control.

Premium Art series optics

Outstanding optical performance has always defined Sigma’s Art series, and this version takes a more deliberate approach to correction at wide apertures. The 15-element, 12-group design incorporates four aspherical elements and two SLD elements to better control spherical and axial aberrations at f1.4. In use, this keeps detail more consistent across the frame when shooting wide open, where fast primes can otherwise soften toward the edges.

Sigma has also introduced a newly developed AAC coating. By applying a low-refractive-index amorphous layer, internal reflections are reduced, limiting flare and ghosting when strong light sources enter the frame. Backlit scenes, therefore, retain stronger contrast and cleaner black levels without heavy post-production editing.

An 11-blade rounded diaphragm maintains a circular aperture shape as it stops down. Combined with improved aberration control, this produces smoother transitions in defocused areas and round specular highlights, supporting natural subject separation at wider apertures.

Upgraded autofocus performance

Autofocus performance has also been updated. Dual HLA motors move the optical group with greater speed while maintaining quiet operation. In practical terms, this improves acquisition timing for stills and reduces the risk of focus-drive noise being detected during video work. A floating focus system maintains correction across the focus range, keeping sharpness consistent from the 0.28m minimum focus distance through to infinity. As a result, close subjects retain definition rather than appearing softer at wider apertures.

Focus breathing has also been controlled through a refinement of the optical layout, reducing angle-of-view changes during refocusing and helping maintain more consistent framing during focus pulls.

Tactile functionality

Sigma has refined the external controls to make adjustments more deliberate and less prone to error. The aperture ring offers direct control from f1.4 to f16, with the option to de-click it for smooth exposure changes or keep stepped feedback for stills. A lock switch prevents unintended movement when set to Auto or manual positions, giving added confidence when carrying the lens or working at speed.

Dual AFL buttons can also be assigned on supported bodies, keeping frequently used functions within reach without shifting grip. Combined with the shorter barrel and approximate 525g weight, the lens feels better balanced on smaller mirrorless bodies and remains steady on lightweight support systems.

Durability and field use

For outdoor work, Sigma has sealed key joints and control areas with a dust- and splash-resistant structure, helping reduce the risk of moisture or particulate ingress in adverse conditions. The front element is further protected with a water- and oil-repellent coating, which makes it easier to clean and helps maintain contrast when shooting in light rain. The supplied LH725-01 petal hood attaches with a locking mechanism, keeping it secure during movement. Shading the front element reduces stray light when working near bright sources and adds a layer of physical protection during transport.
