Completing Sigma’s series of f1.2 Art primes, the Sigma 85mm f1.2 DG Art Lens combines a classic 85mm portrait focal length with the high resolving power and extensive aberration control of the Art line to maximise image quality when shooting wide open. Despite its substantial 17-element construction, Sigma uses a floating mechanism and dual HLA motors to balance image quality with fast and accurate autofocus. This combination of optical performance and focusing speed is packed into a 905g design that weighs less than competing models in its class, giving portrait photographers a more manageable way to work with f1.2.

FAQs:
How does the Sigma 85mm f1.2 DG Art Lens differ from the 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art?
The 85mm f1.2 DG Art expands Sigma’s 85mm range with a larger f1.2 aperture, giving portrait photographers greater control over depth of field than the existing f1.4 model. Sigma has developed a new 17-element optical design to maintain high resolving power at maximum aperture, with dual HLA motors that provide fast, precise autofocus. At 905g, the f1.2 is the larger and heavier option, whereas the 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art retains the advantage in size and weight for photographers prioritising portability.
What other lenses are in Sigma’s f1.2 Art series?
The Sigma f1.2 Art series also includes the 35mm f1.2 DG II Art and 50mm f1.2 DG DN Art, covering wide-angle and standard focal lengths respectively. The 85mm f1.2 DG Art adds the medium-telephoto option, extending the series into a focal length closely associated with portrait photography.
How close can the Sigma 85mm f1.2 DG Art Lens focus?
The lens focuses down to 84cm, where it reaches a maximum magnification of 1:8.9. This gives photographers scope to move beyond conventional portrait framing and capture smaller details at closer distances. The floating focus mechanism helps maintain optical performance throughout the focusing range.
Can I use filters with the Sigma 85mm f1.2 DG Art Lens?
Yes. The lens has an 82mm front filter thread, allowing compatible screw-in filters to attach directly. This includes commonly used circular polarisers for controlling reflections and neutral density filters for reducing the amount of light entering the lens.
Is the Sigma 85mm f1.2 DG Art Lens waterproof?
No. The lens uses a dust- and splash-resistant structure designed to provide additional protection against light moisture and dust, but Sigma explicitly states that it is not waterproof. The front element also has a water- and oil-repellent coating that makes moisture and marks easier to remove. These measures provide practical protection and easier maintenance during regular outdoor photography.
