Expanded Sirui 50mm Anamorphic Lens Key Features:
Build Quality
This lens is built to the standard of much more expensive lenses. It's designed for professional cinematographers and as with any anamorphic lens, it provides unique and visually stimulating video characteristics. The high-quality construction begins with its lightweight and durable aluminium shell and continues all the way to the complex lens construction. Made with German Manufactured Schott optical glass the structure consists of 11 glass elements that are in 8 groups. Of course, this lens construction will provide you with the characteristics lateral lens flare that anamorphic lenses are known for.
The Lens Flare
Yes, amongst other characteristics of anamorphic lenses, this Sirui 50mm will provide you with unique horizontal lens flare. The previously mentioned precision optical construction, combined with multi-layer nanocoatings, will produce horizontal blue streaks of lens flare which in turn will create dramatic, artist and unique lighting effects across your scene.
The Fast Aperture
Another surprising feature of this lens is the impressively fast, maximum f1.8 aperture. This is surprising simply due to the fact that most other anamorphic lenses do allow for this kind of speed, nor for the sheer amount light to be let into the lens. Additionally, the retains sharpness, even when wide open at f1.8.
Surprisingly Small
Anamorphic lenses, by nature, are usually larger than standard spherical lenses. This is due to the amount of, and shape of the glass elements inside the lens. However, this lens is built with a durable aircraft-grade aluminium alloy and precision CNC process which brings the overall weight of the lens to just 560g (this varies slightly depending on the lens mount).
Additionally, the small and compact dimensions of the lens allow you to easily use this lens handheld or operate with a gimbal. It's an ideal lens for videographers who want to experiment with a unique look.
Field of View & Mounts
This lens enlarges your horizontal field of view by 33% which in turn achieves a field of views that equivalent to an APS-C 37.5mm lens when compared with a traditional 50mm APS-C lens. When capturing video or stills, the results need to be de-squeezed in post-production which will result in a cinematic letterbox shaped 2:4:1 image when your camera is set to standard 16x9 video.
This lens is available in various mounts including:

FAQs:
What is an anamorphic lens?
All lenses are made up of glass elements and most spherical lenses are so-called because they have circular lens elements which produce a regular and more-square image. Anamorphic lenses circular lens elements at the back of the lens, but the front elements are cylindrical which appear oval when looked through. This produces a "squeezed" image which is then "de-squeezed" whilst editing resulting in a wide-cinematic shot that has a wider aspect ratio over traditional lenses.
Anamorphic lens use can often be identified by reduced sharpness, increased distortion, edge-of-frame fall off and more dramatic lens flare - J. J. Abrams is a prime example of a director who uses this type of lens. Why would you want a less sharp lens? It comes down to the stylistic choice of the director as these lenses offer a unique and artistic feel to the final film.
