The SIRUI Aurora Series 35mm f1.4 is a full-frame wide-angle prime lens with a fast maximum aperture, designed as a lightweight everyday 35mm with a compact metal build. Weighing just 490g, it balances easily on smaller bodies or gimbals, while the bright f1.4 aperture keeps shutter speeds usable in low light and gives soft background separation for street, travel, and video work without making the lens feel heavy or front-loaded.

Lightweight 35mm for everyday shooting

The Aurora Series 35mm f1.4 sits in the middle of the range as a general-purpose focal length, and the design clearly prioritises handling as much as optical speed. At 490g, the lens feels comfortable for long handheld sessions and does not pull forward on smaller mirrorless bodies. It also works well on stabilisers, where weight balance makes a noticeable difference when filming for longer periods. The metal construction keeps the lens solid without making it heavy, and the size makes it easy to leave mounted all day. For street, travel or documentary work, this kind of balance often matters more than absolute compactness.

Fast f1.4 aperture for low light and bokeh

A bright f1.4 aperture gives this lens a different feel compared to slower 35mm options. You can keep ISO lower in evening light, shoot indoors without pushing shutter speeds too far, and still get clear separation between subject and background when working close. At maximum aperture, the shallow depth of field works well for portraits, close-ups and detail shots, while stopping down keeps sharpness consistent across the frame for landscapes or architecture. The lens maintains good resolution at narrower apertures, so it does not feel like a specialist lens limited to shooting wide open.

Optical design for clean, natural rendering

The optical layout of 16 elements in 11 groups uses three aspherical elements, ED glass, SED glass and high-refractive elements to control colour fringing, distortion and flare. The design ensures clean edges, a neutral colour, and good contrast, even in mixed lighting.

Street and travel photographers will notice the low distortion when shooting buildings, and the controlled flare helps when working at night with strong point light sources. The overall look stays natural rather than overly sharp or harsh, which suits documentary-style work.

Smooth autofocus and video-friendly features

Autofocus is driven by an STM motor, giving quiet operation and steady focus movement. For stills, the lens locks focus quickly and supports eye detection and subject tracking on compatible cameras. For video, the movement is smooth enough for continuous focus without obvious stepping. Focus breathing is kept low, so framing stays consistent when pulling focus. Combined with the de-clickable aperture ring, this makes the lens easier to use for video work, especially on gimbals or handheld rigs where sudden changes are more noticeable.

External controls for practical shooting

The lens includes a full set of physical controls, which makes it easier to adjust settings without diving into menus. The AF/MF switch sits where you expect it, and the function button can be assigned to focus lock or other camera functions. An iris lock prevents the aperture from accidentally moving, and the click-on/off switch lets you switch between stepped and smooth aperture control, depending on whether you are shooting stills or video. These small details make the lens feel closer to a cinema-style design than a basic stills prime.

Weather protection and functional design

The front element has a fluorine coating to resist fingerprints and moisture, which helps when shooting outdoors or in changeable weather. The barrel is sealed against dust and light rain, so the lens does not need constant protection when working outdoors or on location. The supplied lens hood attaches securely with a release button, helping reduce stray light and flare while making removal quick when packing the lens away.

A standard 62mm filter thread ensures straightforward filter compatibility, and electronic contacts allow EXIF transmission and firmware updates through the USB-C port. These small additions make the lens easier to keep current with newer camera bodies.

FAQs:

What type of photography is the SIRUI Aurora 35mm f1.4 best suited to?

A 35mm f1.4 is one of the most general-purpose focal lengths, and this lens is designed to work across street, travel, documentary, and portraits. The wide aperture makes it useful in low light, while the moderate wide-angle view feels natural for everyday shooting without strong distortion.

Is the SIRUI Aurora 35mm f1.4 suitable for video work?

Yes. The STM motor provides smooth, quiet autofocus, and the lens exhibits minimal focus breathing, helping keep framing stable when pulling focus. The aperture ring can also be switched to stepless control, allowing exposure changes during recording without visible jumps. These features make it well-suited to handheld, gimbal and small rig setups.

Does the lightweight design affect handling?

The lower weight makes the lens easier to use for long sessions, especially on smaller mirrorless bodies. It balances well on gimbals and does not feel front-heavy, which helps when shooting video or working handheld for extended periods.

Can the aperture ring be used for video exposure control?

Yes. The lens has a click-on/off switch that lets you choose between stepped-aperture changes for stills or smooth, stepless adjustment for video. There is also an iris lock button to prevent accidental changes, which is useful when the camera is mounted on a rig or stabiliser.

Is the lens weather-sealed?

The lens is designed with dust-resistant and splash-resistant construction, and the front element has a fluorine coating to repel oil and water. It is suitable for outdoor shooting in light rain or dusty conditions, although it should not be treated as fully waterproof equipment.
