What’s new?

The Sony FX2 introduces several key features that distinguish it from its predecessor, the Sony FX3, within the Cinema Line. A high-definition, tiltable OLED EVF enhances visibility for both handheld and rig-based shooting, while a new dedicated Log shooting mode and quick-access switch facilitate shifting between stills, video, and S&Q. The BIG6 CineAlta-inspired home screen provides faster access to essential settings, including codec, resolution, and frame rate. Sony has also updated the hardware with refined mounting points and button placement, as well as an improved grip. With its enhanced internal cooling feature, the FX2 also provides greater control and ease during extended 4K 60p video shoots.

Sensor and processor

At the heart of the FX2 is a 33MP back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor paired with the high-speed BIONZ XR engine. This combination allows oversampled 4K 60p video with full pixel readout and 10-bit 4:2:2 colour, delivering exceptional detail and tonal fidelity. Dual base ISO (800/4000) preserves dynamic range across various lighting conditions, offering over 15 stops for maximum control over colour grading in post production. The FX2 also supports 33MP stills capture, adding flexibility for hybrid productions and behind-the-scenes recording without compromising video quality.

Focus and control

The FX2 offers Fast Hybrid autofocus with real-time Eye AF, AF Assist, and lens breathing compensation for supported Sony lenses, maintaining reliable focus even in shallow depth-of-field or fast-paced scenes. A dedicated Log shooting mode and quick-access S&Q switch enable seamless switching between standard, slow-motion, and still capture. 5-axis in-body image stabilisation supports up to 5.5 stops of compensation, with Active Mode providing extra stability for dynamic handheld shooting. Gyro metadata is also recorded for post-stabilisation and horizon correction using Sony Catalyst software. Paired with the Monitor & Control app, users can manage focus transitions, exposure, and waveform displays in real-time, streamlining setup whether working handheld or on a rig.

Video optimisation

With 16-bit RAW HDMI output, Cine EI modes, and support for MLUTs and S-Cinetone, the FX2 effortlessly captures cinematic footage. Users can record video in XAVC S, S-I, and HS formats across a range of bitrates, with full-frame 10-bit internal recording available up to 4K/60p. Anamorphic de-squeeze, Creative Looks, and the ability to load up to 16 custom user LUTs directly into the camera make it easier to visualise your end result in real-time without committing it to the final image. The FX2 also supports Clear Image Zoom for loss-minimised digital zooming, even with prime lenses. With compatible Power Zoom lenses, users can assign control to buttons, dials, or operate the zoom via the Monitor & Control app for smooth, variable-speed framing.

Cinematic-style production

Sony has refined the features of the FX2 to facilitate confident handheld shooting, flexible media handling, and pro-level sound capture. Its 5-axis in-body image stabilisation, combined with gyro metadata, helps maintain smooth footage even in fast-paced or unstable conditions. Dual card slots support both CFexpress Type A and SD UHS-II cards, allowing you to prioritise speed or capacity depending on your recording format. Additionally, when used with the optional XLR handle, the FX2 enables four-channel 24-bit LPCM audio recording, ideal for productions that demand clean, multi-source sound without relying on external audio gear.

Build, connectivity and storage

Despite its pro-level features, the FX2 retains the lightweight, cage-free body that defined the FX3, now with improved heat management for longer recording times. The tilting LCD touchscreen supports complete menu control, while the new 3.68 M-dot OLED EVF adds a crucial upgrade for handheld, shoulder or rig-based operation. Full-size HDMI, USB-C, and Multi-Terminal connections enable tethering and timecode sync, while Bluetooth and Wi-Fi integration provide wireless support for both remote shooting and file transfer.

FAQs:

What storage options does the Sony FX2 Camera support?

The FX2 features dual card slots that accept both CFexpress Type A and SD UHS-II cards, providing options based on your speed and capacity needs. CFexpress Type A is ideal for high-bitrate formats, while SD cards are well-suited for proxies or lighter codecs. The camera also supports relay recording, simultaneous recording, and auto switch-over, allowing uninterrupted capture across different media types.

Can the Sony FX2 Full-Frame Cinema Line Camera record RAW video externally?

The FX2 outputs 16-bit linear RAW over HDMI, which is compatible with a range of external recorders such as the Atomos Ninja V and Ninja V+. These recorders convert the signal into ProRes RAW, enabling flexible post-production. RAW output is full-frame and pairs seamlessly with the FX2’s Cine EI exposure tools for consistent, colour-managed results.

What are the audio input options on the FX2?

The FX2 includes a 3.5mm stereo input for onboard microphones and supports four-channel 24-bit LPCM recording when paired with the optional XLR Handle. This handle adds two XLR/TRS combo inputs and one additional 3.5mm stereo input, each with individual level control and phantom power. It connects via the Multi Interface Shoe and transmits digital audio directly to the camera. This setup is ideal for interviews, documentary shoots, and live sound capture.

Does the Sony FX2 Camera offer timecode or multicam sync support?

The FX2 supports timecode sync via its Multi-Terminal interface. Using a compatible adapter or cable, you can feed in timecode from a generator or sync device such as the UltraSync BLUE. This feature makes the FX2 suitable for multi-camera productions where accurate syncing is essential.

Can the Sony FX2 be used for livestreaming?

While the FX2 primarily focuses on cinematic video capture, it also supports livestreaming via its USB-C connection using the UVC (USB Video Class) standard. This feature enables it to function as a high-quality webcam when connected to a computer, eliminating the need for additional capture devices. It can deliver a clear video feed suitable for professional streaming setups, ideal for interviews, broadcasts, and remote productions.

What are the dimensions and build of the Sony FX2 Camera?

The Sony FX2 features a compact, cage-free magnesium alloy body that weighs approximately 683g (body, battery pack, SD card, and eyepiece cup). Despite its lightweight design, it features upgraded mounting points, an internal fan for thermal control, and weather sealing for enhanced resistance to dust and moisture. The design supports handheld, rigged, gimbal, or drone-based setups.
