Direct camera control

The RM-DP5 combines monitoring and camera operation on the same 5-inch touchscreen when connected to a compatible Sony Cinema Line camera. The BIG6 screen brings FPS, ISO, shutter, ND filter or iris, Look and White Balance together, with each parameter opening directly from the touchscreen for adjustment. Time Counter and Audio Level Meter information also appears on screen, while shooting information sits outside the main image area to keep the footage unobstructed. Dedicated physical controls provide quick access to frequently used functions without returning to the camera body.

Precise focus and lens control

The supplied Control knob attaches to the monitor and provides high-resolution physical control for focus adjustments on compatible Cinema Line cameras. Its smooth torque supports measured focus pulls, while the focus indicator runs along the edge of the display, keeping lens position visible without covering the image. Mechanical stops and focus point markings can also define positions for repeatable focus movements.

Camera-based autofocus is accessible from the monitor, with touch focus and touch tracking operating according to the settings of a compatible FX camera. You can switch between manual focus and autofocus as required. With a compatible lens attached, button and touchscreen controls also operate zoom and adjust its speed, providing direct lens control from the monitor.

Accurate monitoring of exposure and colour

The 1920 x 1080 touchscreen reaches a maximum brightness of 2,000 cd/m², keeping the monitored image visible under strong outdoor ambient light. Each monitor is individually calibrated using Sony's professional video monitor-grade technology. Continuous compensation corrects colour temperature drift during operation, keeping colour reproduction consistent when evaluating footage over longer periods.

When recording in S-Log3, you can apply a LUT to the monitored image to better represent the intended finished look, rather than judging the flat Log image alone. Six LUT presets are included, with support for importing up to 16 additional LUT files. Waveform, Vector Scope, False Color and Zebra provide references for exposure and colour, while Peaking, Aspect marker and De-Squeeze support focus and framing checks.

Detailed focus checks on screen

Double-tapping the shooting screen magnifies the selected area by up to 6x, providing a closer view for checking critical focus. Pinching adjusts the magnification, while swiping moves the enlarged area across the frame so you can inspect specific detail without changing the camera's composition. Physical controls provide equivalent operation when touchscreen input is less suitable.

The RM-DP5 can also operate solely as an external monitor when you don’t need camera control. You can monitor video through HDMI input, and adjust screen orientation through the menu to suit different mounting positions. HDMI Type A input and output provide connections for incorporating the monitor into a camera setup.

Connectivity, power and mounting

For wired camera control, the RM-DP5 supports 1000BASE-T Ethernet and USB connections. Wireless operation requires a compatible third-party wireless transmission device. With the appropriate device connected, the monitor can control lenses with low latency while transmitting video at up to 4K resolution, letting the monitor and operator work away from the camera when required.

BP-U35 and BP-U70 batteries attach directly to the rear of the monitor, while USB Type-C PD provides an alternative power input. Hot-swap operation maintains power while you change a battery or switch power sources, preventing the monitor from shutting down during production. The aluminium body has 1/4-20 UNC screw holes on the top, bottom, left and right for attaching accessories such as transmitters. A built-in cooling fan dissipates heat during extended operation, with Auto and quieter operating modes available.

FAQs:

What are the weight and dimensions of the RM-DP5?

Without accessories, the RM-DP5 measures approximately 166.8 x 104.7 x 46.9mm and weighs around 671g. With the Control Knob, Blank Focus Ring, and Grip fitted, its dimensions increase to approximately 243.7 x 104.7 x 90mm, and the complete setup weighs around 1,007g. This clearly indicates the additional space and weight required when configuring the monitor with its supplied control accessories.

Which Sony cameras can the RM-DP5 control?

The RM-DP5 provides remote control for compatible Sony Cinema Line cameras. When connected, it can operate focus, zoom and shooting settings, including FPS, ISO, shutter, ND filter or iris, Look and White Balance. Touch focus and touch tracking can also follow the autofocus settings of a compatible FX camera.

Can I use the RM-DP5 without its camera control functions?

Yes. The RM-DP5 can operate as an external monitor when you don’t need camera control. Connect a video source through HDMI, and the 5-inch Full HD display provides independent image monitoring. You can also change the screen orientation through the menu to suit how you mount the monitor.

Does the RM-DP5 connect wirelessly to the camera on its own?

No. Wireless connectivity requires a compatible third-party wireless transmission device. With the appropriate device, the monitor can connect wirelessly to the camera for low-latency lens control, while transmitting video at up to 4K resolution. For wired camera control, Ethernet and USB connections are available.

How does the RM-DP5 help with manual focus?

The supplied Control knob provides high-resolution physical adjustment for focusing compatible Cinema Line cameras. An edge focus indicator shows lens position without covering the monitored image, while mechanical stops and focus-point markings define positions for repeatable focus pulls. Double-tapping the screen also magnifies the selected area by up to 6x for closer focus checking.

What mounting points does the RM-DP5 provide?

The aluminium monitor body has one 1/4-20 UNC screw hole on each of its four sides for attaching accessories such as optional transmitters. Four corner strap holes provide additional attachment points, while the supplied external grip provides a secure hold when operating the monitor and Control knob by hand.
