The 32-bit float recording at up to 96kHz controls how you approach levels in the field. It records in 32-bit float, 24-bit or 16-bit WAV at up to 96 kHz, as well as MP3, so you can choose between maximum headroom or smaller, ready-to-share files. Flexibility for changing environments

The adjustable stereo microphones give you two distinct ways to capture sound. The X-Y configuration keeps capture tight and centred, which works well for interviews or direct sources, while A-B opens up the stereo image for ambience or live environments. Being able to switch between the two on the same unit makes it easier to adapt without changing microphones.

External inputs and 4-track recording

With two XLR/TRS inputs alongside the built-in microphones, you can run a mixed setup without extra gear. They provide phantom power for condenser microphones, so you can plug in studio mics directly when you need more control over placement or tone. Taking a feed from a desk while capturing room sound is straightforward, and the recorder handles both at once as a 4-track recording, giving you more flexibility when balancing sources later. The preamps stay quiet, so even softer sources hold their detail without introducing noise.

Practical use for video and sync

For video work, the DR-40XP fits naturally into a small rig or handheld setup. A built-in 1/4-inch thread makes it easy to mount on a tripod or stand for interviews or fixed-position recording. The slate tone helps align audio and video cleanly in post, and the line output provides a direct feed to a camera if needed. The improved clock accuracy keeps recordings stable over longer takes, which is important when syncing multiple devices.

Handling and connectivity

In day-to-day use, the USB-C connection makes it easy to move between field recording and desk work. You can plug it straight into a laptop or phone and use it as a 2-in/2-out audio interface without reconfiguring your setup. The recorder also handles file transfer and power over this same connection. Recordings are stored directly to microSD cards up to 512 GB, which helps when working on longer sessions.

Battery life is long enough to leave it running through extended sessions, reaching up to 30 hours, so you are not constantly checking levels or swapping batteries mid-recording.
