The Ksana 35mm f2 ASPH introduces the classic 35mm focal length to the Ksana series, bringing one of photography's most widely used perspectives to the lineup. Sitting between wider reportage lenses and standard focal lengths, 35mm provides a natural balance between subject emphasis and environmental context. This makes it well-suited to documentary photography, travel, street photography, and environmental portraiture, where including surroundings forms an important part of the composition.

The addition of a 35mm option broadens the creative scope of the Ksana range while maintaining the line’s established visual identity. Combining modern optical correction with Epoch Coating 84', the lens delivers the distinctive flare characteristics and nostalgic rendering style associated with the Ksana lineup in a focal length many photographers consider a daily-use standard.

Optical Design and Image Quality

The Ksana 35mm f2 ASPH uses an optical design comprising 8 elements arranged in 5 groups. Within this configuration, one aspherical element controls distortion and spherical aberration, one extra-low dispersion element reduces chromatic aberration, and two high-refractive-index elements improve optical efficiency across the frame. These elements work together to maintain high levels of sharpness from centre to edge while preserving accurate colour reproduction.

The optical design supports a maximum aperture of f2, allowing the lens to gather substantial light while providing shallow depth of field when required. Combined with the 10-blade aperture diaphragm, the lens produces smooth transitions between in-focus and out-of-focus areas, helping subjects stand out from their surroundings.

Epoch Coating 84'

Epoch Coating 84' forms a central part of the Ksana 35mm's visual character. Developed from Thypoch's experience in cinema optics, the coating recreates the distinctive optical behaviour associated with lenses from the 1980s. Rather than pursuing a purely neutral rendering style, it introduces a characteristic gold-purple flare and a warmer tonal signature. The multi-layer coating also improves light transmission and suppresses unwanted reflections, helping to maintain contrast when shooting into strong light. This combination of modern optical performance and distinctive flare behaviour allows photographers to introduce a recognisable visual signature directly in-camera while retaining high image quality.

Brass Construction and Mechanical Operation

The lens body is manufactured from solid brass, providing a dense, durable structure with a premium mechanical feel. The brass construction contributes to long-term durability while delivering the tactile qualities traditionally associated with classic rangefinder lenses. A crescent-shaped focus tab provides direct and intuitive manual focus control. The lens also incorporates a tactile resistance point at 0.7m, providing physical feedback as the user approaches the standard rangefinder focusing limit.

Leica M-Mount Compatibility

The Ksana 35mm f2 ASPH features a native Leica M mount, enabling direct attachment to Leica M-series cameras without adapters. This preserves the compact dimensions and balanced handling characteristics expected from rangefinder systems. The lens is compatible with both modern and legacy M-mount bodies while supporting the precise manual-focus experience that defines the Leica system.
