The Voigtländer SEPTON 40mm f2 Aspherical revives the historic SEPTON concept in a compact full-frame standard prime. Its 7-element, 6-group design follows the classic Orthometar layout, with the addition of one aspherical element to improve control at f2, while keeping the lens short and low in distortion. The result is consistent rendering across the frame in a genuinely compact form. Electronic contacts transmit Exif data and stabilisation information, allowing the manual-focus design to work seamlessly with modern digital bodies.

What’s new?
The SEPTON 40mm f2 Aspherical revives the historic SEPTON name in a compact full-frame standard prime. It retains the Orthometar-type structure known for its short optical length and low distortion, and adds one aspherical element to the six-element formula to improve correction at f2. The result is an f2 standard lens that maintains a compact size without compromising edge consistency or contrast. Electronic contact also now integrates the lens with contemporary camera bodies, enabling Exif data recording and communication for stabilisation systems. This combination of classic optical layout and modern electronic integration marks a notable step forward in the brand’s compact full-frame prime lineup.
Optical design and close focusing
Following an Orthometar layout, the SEPTON 40mm f2 Aspherical lens features 7 elements arranged into 6 groups. This structure keeps the optical path short, which naturally controls distortion across the 40mm field of view. Voigtländer has also now added one aspherical element to improve performance at f2, tightening contrast and reducing spherical aberration when shooting wide open. And, thanks to the 10-blade diaphragm, this lens maintains a near-circular aperture through much of its range.
A minimum focusing distance of 0.3m allows users to work closer than most compact standard primes of this size. The 1:5.3 reproduction ratio provides enough scale to capture small objects and tabletop subjects without additional accessories. Optical correction is consistent at close range, maintaining edge definition even when close focusing.
Mechanical construction and handling
For a more rigid feel in use, Voigtländer has given the SEPTON 40mm f2 Aspherical lens an entirely metal barrel. Its short overall length avoids adding bulk to users' setups and is well-balanced, particularly on modern mirrorless bodies. The focus mechanism is also mechanically coupled, providing a direct, tactile response to ring movement. And, the aperture ring operates in 1/3-stop increments for more accurate exposure control.
Electronic integration
Electronic contacts transmit focal length and aperture data to the camera body. This ensures Exif information is recorded correctly and allows compatible in-body stabilisation systems to compensate based on accurate focal length input. The lens remains fully manual in operation while communicating with modern digital cameras.

FAQs:
Does the SEPTON 40mm f2 Aspherical support autofocus?
No. The lens is fully manual focus. Focus adjustment is performed using the mechanically coupled focus ring, which provides consistent resistance for accurate placement. Electronic contacts transmit shooting data, but focusing itself remains manual.
Can I use filters with this lens?
Yes. The lens features a 52mm front filter thread. This allows the use of common screw-in filters such as protective, polarising, or neutral density filters. The thread size supports compact filter systems without increasing overall bulk.
Is the lens suitable for close-up photography?
The 0.3m minimum focusing distance and 1:5.3 maximum reproduction ratio allow relatively tight framing for a standard lens. While not a dedicated macro optic, it supports tabletop subjects and small details with controlled perspective. The optical design maintains correction at closer distances, preserving contrast and edge clarity.
Does the lens transmit shooting data?
Yes. Electronic contacts transmit focal length and aperture information to the camera body for Exif recording. This integration also supports communication with compatible in-body stabilisation systems for more accurate correction.
Is the hood included, and does it significantly increase the overall size?
A screw-in metal hood is included. Its dome-shaped profile maintains the lens's compact proportions while reducing stray light entering the front element. It does not substantially increase the overall size.

The Buy Now Pay Later option comprises a 36 month loan following a six month deferral period.
During the six-month deferral period, it is possible to pay off the loan, either by way of a lump sum or in smaller amounts. If the loan is partially repaid within six months, the remaining interest will be adjusted to reflect the new balance. If the loan is fully repaid within the six-month deferral period, then no interest is payable, however, a £29 early settlement fee is payable in respect of repayments within these six months.
Following the six-month deferral period, Novuna Personal Finance will initiate a monthly direct debit payment for the remaining duration of the loan. Interest will be charged at a rate of 18.9% APR (representative) on outstanding balances (backdated to the first date of the loan). Novuna Personal Finance will send a reminder letter approximately one month before the six-month deferral period is due to elapse.
