FAQs:
How fast does the Westcott FJ400II recycle?
The FJ400II recycles from 0.01 to 0.9 seconds, depending on the power setting. At lower power, the capacitors require less energy to recharge before the next flash, so the head becomes ready almost immediately. At full 400Ws output, recycling takes longer but still stays under one second. This makes the strobe well-suited to portraits, fashion, events, and other shoots where you need to keep a rhythm with the subject.
How many flashes does the battery provide?
The included FJ Pro lithium-ion battery provides up to 550 flashes at full power. When you shoot at lower power settings, the head draws less energy per flash, so the total number of flashes rises into the thousands. The battery charges in about 1.5 hours with the included AC-to-DC adapter. LED status indicators on the battery show remaining power, so you can check it before packing or during a shoot.
What does Freeze mode do?
Freeze mode shortens the flash duration to as fast as 1/24,000 sec t.5. Instead of relying mainly on shutter speed, the very brief burst of light becomes the part that records and stops the moving subject. This is useful for fast gestures, fabric movement, splashes, or product motion where blur would be easily visible. The exact flash duration changes with power level, so lower settings generally give the fastest stopping behaviour.
Can the FJ400II work with different camera brands?
Yes, the FJ400II can work with major camera systems through a compatible, non-included FJ transmitter. With the right trigger, it supports Canon E-TTL / E-TTL II, Fujifilm TTL, Nikon i-TTL and Sony ADI / P-TTL. The built-in 2.4GHz receiver then lets the trigger control the light wirelessly across groups and channels. This means mixed-camera teams can work within the same FJ lighting system by using the correct transmitter for each camera.
What is Creative Mask used for?
Creative Mask controls which lights fire across a sequence of frames. When several FJ lights are assigned to different groups, the FJ400II can fire different combinations without the photographer having to move stands or change the physical setup. This produces separate lighting passes from the same subject position, which can then be combined or masked in editing. It is especially useful for high-volume product, portrait or composite work where repeatable light placement matters.
Can I use the FJ400II with softboxes and umbrellas?
Yes. The FJ400II has a Bowens S front mount for compatible softboxes, reflectors and other modifiers. It also includes a 9mm umbrella receptacle, so an umbrella shaft can pass through the mount and sit in front of the flash tube. The supplied Rapid Box Switch / Beauty Dish Switch insert lets you use compatible Westcott Switch modifiers. Because the flash tube extends forward, light spreads broadly into modifiers for a more even fill across the surface.
