What’s new?

The Canon EOS C50 introduces several firsts to the Cinema EOS system, marking the series’ most compact and lightweight full-frame body at just 670g. It is the first Cinema EOS model to feature 7K open-gate 3:2 recording, enabling anamorphic capture and multi-format delivery from a single take. The sensor provides over 15 stops of dynamic range and captures 32MP still images for hybrid productions. Positioned between the hybrid EOS R5 C and the video-centric EOS C70, the C50 provides a technical bridge for independent creators and small crews, with higher-tier models such as the EOS C80 and C400 catering to large-scale, high-end productions.

7K full-frame CMOS sensor with DIGIC DV processor

The EOS C50 features a 7K full-frame CMOS sensor and the DIGIC DV processor. It records 7K 60p RAW internally, preserving highlight and shadow information for accurate grading, while oversampled 4K uses the full sensor output to reduce noise and sharpen detail. The dynamic range exceeds 15 stops in full-frame mode and 16 stops in Super 35mm crop mode when using Canon Log 2. The base ISO of 800 or 6400 supports flexible exposure in RAW or Log recording, with an extended sensitivity range from ISO 100 to 25,600 (expandable to 102,400). A wide shutter angle range, from 11.25° to 360°, allows for precise motion control in cinematic shooting. The full-frame sensor enhances low-light performance in venues such as theatres or live events, creating a shallow depth of field for a cinematic look.

Cinema RAW Light, XF-AVC and XF-HEVC formats

For productions that need maximum flexibility, the C50 records in a wide choice of formats. Cinema RAW Light captures 16-bit sensor data in files that are smaller but still hold highlight and shadow detail for grading. Canon Log 2 and Log 3 extend dynamic range while ensuring colour matches across the Cinema EOS range. XF-AVC and XF-HEVC S produce efficient 10-bit 4:2:2 files that are ready for fast editing and broadcast. To streamline multi-platform delivery, the camera can record a 4K master and a cropped vertical or square version simultaneously, enabling users to create content for broadcast and social media in a single production run.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with EOS iTR AF X

Autofocus is driven by Dual Pixel CMOS AF II and EOS iTR AF X recognition, providing users with accurate tracking across the entire frame. This system identifies humans, animals and vehicles, holding focus even during unpredictable movement. In video mode, the autofocus shifts smoothly between subjects, and in stills it responds quickly enough to track focus during high-speed bursts.. When paired with RF lenses, autofocus communicates directly with lens stabilisation, helping users achieve sharp handheld footage, steady gimbal shots, and consistent focus when rigging the camera in complex setups.

32MP stills with 40fps continuous shooting

Reinforcing Canon’s dedication to stills, the C50 retains strong photographic features alongside its video-first design. It records in RAW, C-RAW, JPEG, and HEIF, providing users with files suited for detailed post-production work or smaller formats for faster delivery. The electronic shutter shoots continuously at up to 40 frames per second, with a pre-continuous mode that captures frames just before the first shutter is released. Shutter speeds extend to 1/16000, enabling users to freeze fast action with precision. This carefully considered hybrid design allows users to capture both cinematic footage and high-quality stills within the same project, making it easier to take productions from recording through to editing and delivery with a single camera.

Modular handle with XLR audio

The modular top handle integrates two full-size XLR inputs with manual dials and 48V phantom power, allowing broadcast microphones to connect directly to the camera. Combined with a 3.5mm mic terminal and Canon’s multi-function shoe, the C50 delivers professional in-camera audio without the need for an external recorder.

Monitoring tools and operation

A 3.0-inch LCD touch panel with a 1.62-million-dot resolution provides a clear, responsive view for both setup and monitoring. The EOS C50 also features built-in waveform, false colour, zebras, peaking, LUT support, and user markers, providing operators with accurate exposure and focus checks on set without relying on external monitors. With 14 assignable buttons and a tally lamp system, users can tailor controls for quick access to key functions, helping crews work more efficiently whether shooting handheld, on a gimbal or in a studio rig.

Connectivity and controls

For streamlined production, the camera provides HDMI, USB-C, timecode, mic, headphone and remote ports, with two XLR inputs available via the modular handle. A multi-function shoe supports Canon’s digital audio accessories, providing crews with flexible sound options without the need for external recorders. Built-in dual-band Wi-Fi enables wireless transfer and IP streaming, while an optional USB-C Ethernet adapter offers a wired connection. The C50 also supports Frame.io Camera-to-Cloud for direct proxy upload, as well as Canon’s XC Protocol for multi-camera synchronisation and remote operation across Cinema EOS, XF, and PTZ cameras.

Compact build with active cooling

The EOS C50’s 670g body is designed for lightweight rigs and travel, yet maintains the same reliability expected from larger Cinema EOS models. A redesigned front air intake with active cooling ensures 7K and 4K recording continues without time limits, supporting long interviews, event coverage, or extended documentary takes. Multiple 1/4-inch threads make it easy to adapt the camera to cages, gimbals or tripods, while dual CFexpress and SD card slots with proxy recording keep footage secure and manageable.

How good is the EOS C50’s battery life?

The camera comes with an LP-E6P battery pack, which provides full functionality, including network communication and HDR assist. It also accepts LP-E6NH packs, although these have restrictions on certain features. For extended shooting, users can power the camera via the DR-E6P or DR-E6C DC couplers with the AC Adapter CA-946, or through USB-C with the PD-E2 power adapter. The EOS C50 is also compatible with the optional BG-R20 battery grip.

Can the camera be used for live streaming or remote production?

Yes. The built-in Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) supports IP streaming in multiple formats, including UDP, RTP, SRT, and RTSP. The USB-C terminal delivers UVC output for direct video streaming and UAC audio class support for 16-bit/48 kHz audio. With an optional USB-C Ethernet adapter, users can establish a wired connection, and the camera applies custom LUTs for accurate colour in live productions.
