It has a 40fps silent electronic shutter with AF tracking and 20 frames of pre-continuous shooting, allowing you to follow a scene without losing image quality. Pre-capture ensures you can get photos moments before the shutter release, whether shooting on the sidelines at a sporting event or following wildlife in their natural habitat.

Capture the Action with Enhanced Autofocus

A notable enhancement featured on the Canon EOS R1 is the latest version of Dual Pixel CMOS, Dual Pixel Intelligent AF. This new autofocus system offers more precise subject-tracking that is ideal for team sports. It identifies key players’ faces and upper bodies while avoiding obstacles or other players. For even more accurate results, you can use this with the registered people priority function, which allows you to track certain subjects over others consistently. With the new ‘Action Priority’ mode, the camera automatically identifies common action poses in basketball, football, and volleyball to keep the main subject in focus and catch crucial moments in sharp definition. Eye-control AF has been improved in the EOS R1 to twice the level in the EOS R3 with a higher pixel count sensor, enhanced LEDs, a larger eye detection area, and an updated detection algorithm, allowing for more reliable tracking in complex shoots.

The R1 is equipped with the new Cross-Type AF system, designed for challenging conditions. For example, when shooting through a tennis net, the camera will pick out smaller subjects and lock on to vertical detail if horizontal detail is missing the subject under the AF area. This feature is excellent for achieving fast, accurate results while catching fleeting moments.

Canon’s EOS R1 delivers high-quality photography and video, providing excellent hybrid performance for professionals. It supports 6K RAW video up to 60P, 4K at 120P and 60P oversampled from 6K, and Full HD 240P. You can record 12-bit RAW internally to a compatible memory card or record externally via an HDMI type A port. The EOS R1 lets you use Cinema EOS Movie Recording formats and Canon Log 2 and 3 with proxy recording fully supported between two cards and four-channel audio. Not only does this enable you to record industry-standard video with audio, but you can also retain useful information for editing in post-production. It also offers Dual Shooting, recording high-resolution, 17-megapixel (16:9) stills and Full HD video simultaneously and separately.

It ensures support for the C2PA content authenticity format, reviewing footage or images, industry-standard file naming, separate photo/video folders, and advanced tagging in News ML-G2 standard. You can also crop and upscale images in-camera, so there’s no need to edit every photo in separate applications. The EOS R1 assist users in meeting strict guidelines and short deadlines, positioning itself as an excellent option for a professional photography or video workflow.
