The optical structure is made up of 17 elements, in 13 groups and this includes the use of two Fluorite and one Super UD glass, as well as the use of ASC and Super Spectra lens coatings. This optical makeup is complemented by a powerful Dual power focus drive that offers impressively fast autofocus acquisition, where focus is maintained even when tracking fast-moving subjects. Optical Structure & Image Quality
Canon has demonstrated its mastery of telephoto optics with a complex and intricate lens structure that is comprised of 17 glass lens elements that are arranged into 13 groups. The use of two Flourite lens elements and one SUD low dispersion glass lens results in exceptional edge-to-edge sharpness and clarity across each and every frame, as well as an Air Sphere coating (ASC) and Super Spectra coating that together enhances the anti-reflective properties of the lens. Image quality is ensured even at this lens's wide maximum f2.8 aperture. This bright and fast aperture also makes for excellent low light performance, ideal for early morning wildlife watching or evening sporting events.
Autofocus & Image Stabilisation
Further increasing the image quality that this lens can produce is its autofocus and its image stabilisation. The lens features a strong onboard image stabilisation that offers up to 5-stops of compensation, which combined with its wide aperture and low-light performance, you'll be able to capture some truly stunning and dramatic super-telephoto images that are free of camera shake. When it comes to autofocus (AF), the RF 400mm f2.8 L IS USM Lens features a Dual Power Focus Drive that delivers impressively fast and accurate AF performance that is vital when shooting at such a great telephoto focal range. The lens features a second power connection on the lens mount which means it can draw more power from compatible cameras such as the Canon EOS R5, and that boost of power results in increased USM speed for faster focus acquisition and more reliable focus tracking of fast-moving subjects. Additionally, you have access to a full-time manual focus (MF) and AF start/stop buttons on the side of the barrel.

Is this compatible with a lens extender?
This lens is only compatible with the Canon RF 1.4x & Canon RF 2x Extender. Each extender maintains full AF performance and image stabilaistion.
Can I use filters with this lens?
The lens features a 52mm drop-in filter system.
How much does this lens weigh? Can I use it handheld?
Whilst you could use this handheld, it's not advised. Weighing in at 2890g, for the best results it'd be best to use either a monopod or tripod.

Buy now pay later
The Buy Now Pay Later option comprises a 36 month loan following a six month deferral period.
During the six-month deferral period, it is possible to pay off the loan, either by way of a lump sum or in smaller amounts. If the loan is partially repaid within six months, the remaining interest will be adjusted to reflect the new balance. If the loan is fully repaid within the six-month deferral period, then no interest is payable, however, a £29 early settlement fee is payable in respect of repayments within these six months.
Following the six-month deferral period, Novuna Personal Finance will initiate a monthly direct debit payment for the remaining duration of the loan. Interest will be charged at a rate of 18.9% APR on outstanding balances (backdated to the first date of the loan). Novuna Personal Finance will send a reminder letter approximately one month before the six-month deferral period is due to elapse.
