The UK’s drone rules are based on the risk of the flight – where you fly, the proximity to other people, and the size and weight of your drone. Any drone with a camera will require an Operator ID, regardless of weight. However, an additional Flyer ID is required for drones of 250g and over.

Other qualifications are still needed for commercial drone use, and even then, this doesn't mean you can fly your drone anywhere. Ensure you know the rules and consult the Drone Code before you fly; if you want to fly commercially, you must take the PfCO CAA exam (Permission for Commercial Operations).

This drone may weigh over 250g once accessories such as propeller guards or ND filters are attached. It is the pilot’s responsibility to check the take-off weight before flying.

In the UK, drones weighing 250g or more require the pilot to hold a Flyer ID, which involves passing a free online test provided by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Regardless of weight, all drones with a camera must be registered to obtain an Operator ID.

From 1 January 2026, the CAA will allow C1-class drones to operate in the A1 ‘over people’ category, currently accessible only to C0 drones.
