In line with Fujifilm’s dedication to tried and tested technology, the X-S20 pairs its 26.1MP X-Trans 4 BSI CMOS Sensor with the high-speed image processing engine ‘X-Processor 5’. This processor is borrowed from this camera’s high-end X-T5 sibling, elevating the X-S20 far above standard compact mid-range cameras. This masterful combination results in a compact and lightweight system overflowing with new and exciting features designed to inspire a new generation of creatives to push the boundaries.

Elevated Video Content

The first and most notable upgrade from the X-S10 is the improved video specs. Thanks to its new processing engine, the X-S20 can record 6.2K 30P 4:2:2 10-bit video internally and supports other extensive video functions, including 4K 60P and 1080 240P. The camera also features F-Log2 for recording video in the expanded 13+ stops dynamic range to provide enriched tonality and more creative freedom in post-production.

The X-S20 also helps users to get serious about their video content with support for ProRes and BlackMagic RAW formats via HDMI. When combined with an ATOMOS HDMI device, the X-S20 can record RAW video output as 12-bit Apple ProRes RAW in resolutions up to 6.2K and with frame rates up to 29.97fps. Users are awarded the same resolution and frame rates when combining the X-S20 with Blackmagic Design Video Assist 12G.

Upgraded Autofocus Performance

Further reinforcing the X-S20 as the perfect camera for empowering its users is the improved Hybrid Autofocus system. Combining contrast and phase detection autofocusing, this camera transitions away from the manual efforts needed to track a subject in previous models, opting for a new and improved subject detection system. Developed using deep learning technology, the X-S20 AI algorithm can detect everything from birds and insects to aeroplanes and drones. This AF system automatically tracks subjects and keeps them in focus, allowing users to concentrate on their creative vision. It also enables stable focusing even in the AF-C mode.

Thanks to this new subject detection function, the X-S20 can incorporate an AUTO mode. This mode automatically selects optimum settings according to the scene. And, for total creative control, users can choose from 19 Film Simulation presets, including PROVIA/Standard, Velvia/Vivid, ASTIA/Soft, Classic Chrome, PRO Neg Hi, PRO Neg Std, Classic Neg, Nostalgic Neg, ETERNA/Cinema, ETERNA BLEACH BYPASS, ACROS, ACROS + Ye Filter, ACROS + R Filter, ACROS + G Filter, Black & White, Black & White + Ye Filter, Black & White + R Filter, Black & White + G Filter, and Sepia.

Optimised for Vlogging

Whilst the X-S20 is packing some serious specs for professional-level results, it doubles as the perfect camera for vloggers. The X-S20 has a five-axis in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) mechanism offering up to a 7.0-stop advantage. This makes the X-S20 an excellent option for shooting handheld with compensation for camera shake. It also helps users get high-quality results at night or in low-light conditions, allowing them to shoot wherever they like at whatever time.

The YouTuber-friendly features add yet another layer of convenience to the X-S20. Users can switch their cameras to Vlog Mode by turning the dial on the top panel. When selected, the X-S20 automatically adjusts parameters to optimise self-portraits, providing a beautifully defocused background and a shallow depth of field. Reviewers will also benefit from the dedicated Product Priority Mode. This feature automatically prioritises products that temporarily enter the frame and are presented close to the camera.

Intuitive Handling

Continuing with vlogging optimisation, Fujifilm has reinvented the latest X-S20 hardware to offer a more streamlined shooting experience. The X-S20 features the signature X-S Series’ large grip for comfortable handling while keeping the body compact and lightweight at just 491g. Whilst this makes it easier to handle the X-S20 for longer, you might wonder if the battery life is good enough for extended shoots. Fujifilm is a step ahead and has introduced a new NP-W235 battery with more than double the number of frames (approx. 800) compared to the previous model.

If you’re out on location or snapping shots as you travel, successfully monitoring what’s in the frame is essential for creators. Fujifilm has upgraded the X-S20 with a 2.36-million-dot EVF and a 1.84-million-dot vari-angle LCD monitor, granting users access to all kinds of viewing angles and making positioning easier. Operating the camera using the LCD is just as straightforward, with options to swipe, pinch-in / pinch-out, double-tap, and drag.

Get Connected, Go Live

With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, the X-S20 affords users total flexibility. It also supports UVC 4K 60P Live Streaming and can double as a webcam when connected to your computer using a USB-Type C cable. After the initial Bluetooth pairing, this app can remotely complete all operations remotely on a smartphone or tablet. This allows users to review images in Live View Mode and is particularly useful for group shots and fixed-point shooting. The new Backup/Restore function lets users save camera settings like ‘Shooting Menu’ and ‘Setup Menu’ in the app. Favourite camera settings for different subject types or shooting situations can also be managed in the app, making it quick and easy to achieve your creative vision.
