If you’re shopping for a Nikon camera, there are several different types to choose from. Let’s break them down.
Nikon DSLRs
Nikon DSLRs are some of the most popular cameras in the world. Since the days of film SLR cameras, Nikon has made a name for itself as one of the best photographic manufacturers for amateur and professional photographers alike.
Today, Nikon’s DSLR range is extensive. It’s divided into two types of model: FX-format, the more professional models with full-frame sensors, and DX-format, which are more affordable and use smaller APS-C sensors.
Nikon DSLRs feature fast autofocus systems, can shoot at impressive burst rates, are often built with weatherproofing, and have excellent battery life. Let’s look at a few popular examples from the range:

Nikon D3500:
This is commonly regarded as one of the best beginner cameras you can get. Capable and high-quality, but packed with guide modes and tutorials to help new users. A perfect camera to learn with.

Nikon D5600:
A popular hobbyist DSLR, the Nikon D5600 makes a great “step up” camera. It has a Monocoque Carbon-Reinforced shell, but only weighs 415g, making it both strong and lightweight – great for outdoor photography.

Nikon D850:
A fantastic professional DSLR for all types of photography, including wildlife, sports, landscape, and portrait. With a 45.7 megapixel back-illuminated, full-frame (FX-format) CMOS sensor, the Nikon D850 produces high-quality images. It shoots 4K UHD video, has a 153-point autofocus system, and can capture approximately 1,840 images on a single battery charge.
Nikon mirrorless cameras
Nikon’s mirrorless range is the incredible Nikon Z series. These cameras are mostly full-frame professional models, with an emphasis on speedy and silent shooting. Communication between the camera and lens is ultra fast, and the flagship models also have excellent autofocus.
Nikon has also started to introduce APS-C and affordable full-frame cameras to the Z series, making it more accessible to amateur and hobbyist photographers.

Nikon Z7 II:
The current flagship king of the Nikon Z series, the Nikon Z7 II is a professional-grade camera. It’s equipped with dual processors for ultra-fast performance, and can capture up to 200 images at 10fps in a single burst.

Nikon Z6 II:
A powerful camera at a more affordable price point than the Z7 II, the Nikon Z6 II is also equipped with dual processors. It’s an incredibly fast full-frame camera, with superb low-light capabilities thanks to its wide 100-51200 ISO sensitivity range.

Nikon Z50:
The first DX-format camera in the NIkon Z stable, the Nikon Z50 is designed to tempt budget-conscious and casual photographers into the wonders of this fast mirrorless system. With Intelligent Eye-Detection autofocus and 4K/UHD video recording at 30p, it’s no slouch when it comes to top-of-the-line features.
Nikon compact cameras
Nikon’s compact camera range is named Nikon CoolPix. It comprises two distinct types of camera.
Nikon CoolPix bridge cameras
These are DSLR-styled cameras with fixed lenses that have one thing in common – huge zooms! If you want to be able to see craters on the moon, to bring distant objects into sharp focus, or get a shot of wildlife that will never let you get within 100m of it, these cameras are great choices.
Examples include the Nikon Coolpix P950, which has an 83x optical zoom equivalent to 24-2000mm and an OLED electronic viewfinder. Or, to push it still further, the Nikon Coolpix P1000 has an incredible 125x optical zoom, equivalent to 24-3000mm. Then there’s also a smaller option in the Nikon CoolPix A1000, for those who want a more pocketable camera.
Nikon CoolPix waterproof cameras
Nikon also produces a line of waterproof compact cameras, also known as tough cameras. Many of these are very simple and affordable, making them great for family holidays. The Nikon Coolpix W150 is waterproof to 10m, shockproof to 1.8m and freezeproof to -10°C, and is designed to be operated with point-and-shoot ease. The Nikon Coolpix W300 is even tougher: waterproof to 30m without housing, shockproof from 2.4m, and freezeproof down to -10°C. It also benefits from an f/2.8 lens with 5x optical zoom.

Frequently asked questions
- Can you use Canon lenses with Nikon cameras?
-
Not natively, as the two systems have different lens mounts. There are mount adapters that allow you to use lenses from one system on a camera from another. Just bear in mind, however, that this can mean certain functions like autofocus don’t function the same way (or don’t function at all).
- Which Nikon cameras are full-frame?
-
Nikon’s professional and enthusiast DSLR and mirrorless cameras are all full-frame. They are referred to as “FX-format”, as opposed to “DX-format”, which denotes the firm’s APS-C cameras.
- Which Nikon cameras shoot 4K video?
-
The vast majority of contemporary Nikon cameras shoot 4K video. The only modern exceptions are those oriented towards novice users, such as the D3500 and D5600. All Z-mount mirrorless cameras shoot 4K video. If you’re buying an older used camera, it probably only shoots Full HD, but you should always check.
- Do Nikon cameras have internal memory?
-
All Nikon cameras require a memory card – different models can accept different types, so check your camera before hitting “buy” on anything!
- Do Nikon cameras have Wi-Fi?
-
The vast majority of Nikon cameras have Wi-Fi. The only exceptions are ultra-cheap cameras like the CoolPix W150, and older cameras that pre-date Wi-Fi being common. If you’re buying used, then double-check.
