The AF 60-180mm f2.8 for Sony FE expands Samyang’s Compact Zoom Series as its first dedicated telephoto zoom. Co-engineered with Schneider-Kreuznach, it complements the AF 14-24mm f2.8 FE and AF 24-60mm f2.8 FE, providing continuous focal-length coverage from 14mm to 180mm across just three lenses. At approximately 730g, it remains considerably lighter than many conventional 70-200mm f2.8 designs while maintaining a constant f2.8 aperture and a practical telephoto range.

A floating focus system maintains image quality throughout the focusing range, while a maximum magnification of 0.26x and minimum focusing distance of 0.35m provide closer focusing capability than many lenses in this category. Additional features include weather sealing, a zoom lock, direct USB firmware updates, and intuitive barrel-mounted controls, making the lens a notable addition to the Compact Zoom Series.

Compact Zoom Series telephoto design

The AF 60-180mm f2.8 for Sony FE is the third lens in Samyang’s Compact Zoom Series, developed in collaboration with Schneider-Kreuznach. Its optical construction features 17 elements arranged in 14 groups, including 1 High-Refractive (HR), 7 Extra-Low Dispersion (ED), and 2 Aspherical (ASP) elements. The HR element contributes to a more compact optical layout, while the ED and ASP elements reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, maintaining resolution and contrast throughout the zoom range. This design allows the lens to balance telephoto reach, optical correction, and portability.

At approximately 730g, the lens is one of the lightest constant-aperture telephoto zooms in its category. The reduced weight lowers the physical load during extended handheld shooting while improving overall portability. This approach allows users to carry a telephoto lens more comfortably without moving to a slower variable-aperture design.

Optimised 60-180mm focal range

The 60-180mm focal range concentrates on commonly used telephoto focal lengths while avoiding unnecessary extension beyond 180mm. This approach allows the lens to maintain a smaller overall design while still providing significant reach for portraits, sports, and everyday telephoto photography. At longer focal lengths, 180mm produces strong subject compression, visually reducing the distance between foreground and background elements. This behaviour helps isolate subjects within the frame while maintaining natural perspective characteristics expected from telephoto optics.

Constant f2.8 aperture

A constant f2.8 aperture is maintained throughout the entire zoom range. Because the aperture remains unchanged while zooming, exposure settings remain consistent regardless of focal length. The large aperture also allows more light to reach the sensor, enabling lower ISO settings in low-light conditions. Combined with the telephoto focal range, it produces shallow depth of field and smooth background separation without exposure shifts during zoom operation.

Floating focus system and linear STM

The AF 60-180mm f2.8 incorporates a floating focus system that adjusts optical groups according to focusing distance. This design reduces the image degradation that can occur when lenses move between close-focus and distant subjects. As the focusing distance changes, sharpness and contrast remain more consistent across the frame. The result is predictable image quality from the minimum focusing distance through to infinity, allowing users to move between different subject distances without compromising detail retention.

Autofocus is driven by a linear stepping motor that provides fast, accurate focusing while operating quietly. The STM system enables reliable autofocus performance for capturing stills of moving subjects and low-noise operation during video recording.

Enhanced close-up capability

The lens offers a maximum magnification of 0.26x with a minimum focusing distance of 0.35m. These specifications provide greater close-up capability than is typically associated with telephoto zoom lenses. By allowing subjects to be framed at shorter working distances, the lens can capture finer detail without requiring additional accessories or dedicated macro optics. This close-up shooting performance expands its usefulness beyond traditional telephoto applications and allows smaller subjects to occupy a greater portion of the frame.

Design and operation

Samyang has incorporated several practical handling features into the AF 60-180mm f2.8. An AF/MF switch enables immediate transitions between autofocus and manual focus, while the focus ring provides direct, precise manual adjustments. A zoom lock prevents unwanted lens extension during transport, helping to maintain the lens's compact form when not in use. The integrated USB port allows firmware updates to be installed directly without external accessories, ensuring users can maintain compatibility and access future performance refinements. The lens also incorporates weather sealing and a newly developed high-strength material construction. Together, these features provide greater durability and protection against dust and moisture during everyday outdoor use.
