The Sigma 20-60mm f2.8-4 DG Contemporary Lens expands Sigma’s full-frame Contemporary zoom range with a new standard zoom, sitting alongside the compact 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary and the wider-ranging 20-200mm f3.5-6.3 DG Contemporary. Its 20-60mm range brings an ultra-wide 20mm starting point to a shorter everyday zoom, giving photographers a 94.5° angle of view at the wide end before reaching a natural 60mm perspective. The f2.8 maximum aperture at 20mm also lets in more light, helping photographers keep ISO lower when working in low light. Close focusing extends the versatility of that range, reaching 1:2.3 maximum magnification at 35mm for detailed close-up framing. At 385g, the lens also maintains the Contemporary series’ focus on compact, lightweight optics. The result is a new take on Sigma’s everyday zoom, prioritising wider coverage, close focusing and portability.

Ultra-wide 20mm to a natural 60mm perspective

The Sigma 20-60mm f2.8-4 DG Contemporary Lens covers a 3x zoom range from ultra-wide 20mm through to a natural 60mm perspective. At 20mm, the 94.5° angle of view takes in substantially more of the scene, giving landscape and travel photographers greater freedom to work with foreground, subject and surroundings in a single composition. It also provides additional framing room when photographing in confined spaces where physical movement is limited.

Moving through the zoom range gives photographers more control over how much of the surroundings remain in the frame. Wider focal lengths retain a stronger sense of space, with the 60mm end providing tighter framing and a more natural perspective for everyday subjects and portraits. This gives photographers who regularly work at wider focal lengths access to ultra-wide, wide and standard perspectives without changing lenses.

Optical performance in a compact Contemporary design

The 15-element, 13-group optical design uses 3 SLD and 3 aspherical elements to maintain image quality across the 20-60mm zoom range. The SLD elements help correct chromatic aberrations, with the aspherical elements controlling other optical aberrations across the changing angle of view. This is particularly important at the 20mm end, where the lens needs to maintain detail across a much wider frame before moving through to a natural 60mm perspective.

A 9-blade rounded diaphragm maintains a naturally circular aperture, helping produce smooth, rounded out-of-focus highlights when working with shallow depth of field. The optical design also suppresses flare and ghosting, helping preserve contrast and clarity when strong light enters the lens. This is useful when the sun or another bright light source is within or near the frame, particularly with the wider 20mm field of view. Together, these optical measures maintain image quality across the wider zoom range without sacrificing the compact design that defines Sigma’s Contemporary line.

Close focusing throughout the zoom range

Close focusing adds another level of versatility to the 20-60mm range, with a minimum focusing distance of 15.8cm at 28mm and maximum 1:2.3 magnification at 35mm. This lets smaller subjects and details fill more of the frame without requiring a dedicated macro lens. Close-up capability remains strong towards the long end, reaching 1:2.9 magnification at 60mm for tighter framing and a different perspective. Combined with the ultra-wide 20mm starting point, this gives photographers considerably more variety from a single compact zoom. The lens can move from expansive landscapes and travel photography to detailed close-ups without changing optics, reinforcing the 20-60mm’s role as a lightweight everyday lens.

HLA autofocus and reduced focus breathing

The HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) uses a linear motor to provide fast, precise autofocus and tracking for moving subjects, including during high-frame-rate shooting. Its quiet operation also keeps focusing noise to a minimum during recording, giving the 20-60mm responsive autofocus without compromising its compact design. Reduced focus breathing also limits changes in the angle of view as focus moves between subjects, helping maintain more consistent framing during focus transitions. Combined with the quiet HLA drive, this gives photographers fast autofocus for everyday subjects and more controlled focusing when recording video.

Lightweight design for everyday full-frame kits

Weighing 385g, the 20-60mm combines its ultra-wide 20mm starting point with the lightweight design philosophy of Sigma’s Contemporary line. Its 72.2mm diameter and 86mm length keep the lens compact on a full-frame camera, making wider coverage easier to carry as part of an everyday or travel kit rather than relying on a separate ultra-wide lens. Even the 67mm filter thread keeps accessories relatively compact, reinforcing the focus on reducing the kit's overall size.

That portability is matched by practical protection for regular outdoor use. A dust- and splash-resistant structure helps protect the lens from light moisture and dust, with a water- and oil-repellent front coating making marks and moisture easier to remove. The construction is resistant rather than waterproof, but the combination gives photographers a lightweight standard zoom that is easier to carry, use and maintain when travelling or spending more time outdoors.
